Came across this hard times token in a coin shop in my wife’s hometown. Was killing some time last Spring while visiting in-laws and this piqued my interest.

Now MS 64 RB, which I believe ties it for highest graded at our hosts but not positive yet.

Got a little pep in my step this afternoon now :)

    There are five Brown designations of this token variety, but this one is the sole RB and no Red, in PCGS holders. She's a beauty!

    Nice!

    This is not a Hard Times Token, though. It was misattributed long ago because of the date. This is a token from the early 20th Century, and the 1837 date was the year that the business started (if I recall correctly.)

    Yes sir. I believe it was in or around 1902 when many of these JD Peacock “Hard Times” tokens (although I’m not certain yet if that includes this piece as that information was relative to a different HT catalogue number with an almost identical design) were manufactured with intent of reproducing the original 1837 design.

    I’m sure many others know more about it than I do and definitely appreciate all the info anyone wants to chime in with!

    I never knew this. I'm glad to know.

    Sort of like the Mott token, then, which has been in the Colonials section of the Red Book for a long time because of the 1789 date, even though it was probably a 50 year anniversary token.

    I currently own the finest known example, an MS-66 RB. It is pictured on the CRO Archives page.

    Specializing in coins with "thin film interference" & "sulfur impregnated surfaces" due to hanging out with "old bags" and "wrappers"

    @Toningintheblood……. Your token:

    Indeed this is a gorgeous specimen! I love it.

    I think yours (HT-M19) is highest graded across all variations. I didn’t know there were as many as listed. (Hope you don’t mind me sharing it’s TrueView). Amazing piece!
