If a coin’s “totally worn out”, how can you know what it is, in order for it to qualify for “best looking”?

I think Barber coins do the best job of retaining their basic design features; even when the coin is at the end of it's service. James

I don’t have a pic handy but since I started collecting coins at about 10, I always thought low grade SLQs were attractive.

If it is totally worn out and devoid of any features, may as well be a blank planchet.

IMHO Seated Liberty coinage holds its design as well as any series when worn down. Everyone has an opinion and we are all right. Great post.

Agreed. There hasn’t been a single “totally worn out” coin (or anything close to that) posted to this thread. As posted, the topic doesn’t make sense.

As a post it was entertaining and interesting,

I have to agree with the Barber camp here. Even on the well-circulated ones, you can still read the date and most of Liberty's outline, which is more than you can say for a lot of series at that level of wear. There's something honest about a coin that looks good even after doing its job.

    Buffalo nickel for me.

Honestly, almost anything but Barber coinage. They’re unattractive even when in MS. Maybe circulation mellows them, but they aren’t attractive at any stage.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Make no mistake about it, I like it. Someone would most likely pay a premium for it.

In reality, the grading has taken a hit. If they weigh it, the melt value took a hit as well. @jacrispies is the rest of that gold in your pocket? 🤣 😂 😉

Every year I melt my pants and get $3,000 cashed out.

Back to reality, this coin was sold at Stack's earlier this year. Just thought it was outstanding to the usual high relief offerings.

I vote Buffalo, though I don't think the OP example is "worn-out" enough to qualify, even though the date is unreadable, there is too much design left. The pocket piece classic commens are worn enough, but most everything else is too nice for that description! Crypto's Barbers are close, but they are just a little too nice for me to count as "worn-out".

I don't like the Barber design, but it does handle the wear without getting less attractive (maybe even the opposite), and it sure makes a good baseline as a very common example of "worn-out".

If it's totally worn out, how can you be sure it's a US coin?
