Has anyone ever received a higher grade on a coin sent in for reholdering (not reconsideration)?
They just posted grades for 2 coins I sent for reholdering and I had a nice surprise when I looked at the results.

Reholdering is just that...replacing the holder (slab). No regrade or reconsideration is given if it is being reholdered. Or am I missing something?

My guess is that it was an input error.
Many years ago I was speaking to David Hall - then with PCGS - at a Long Beach show. And he showed me a group of several common date Walking Liberty halves that had just been graded MS68.
The only problem was that the coins had been submitted for reholdering in lower grade holders!
Edited to add: Apparently, somehow, in the midst of the reholder submission, there was an input error, which David Hall was correcting. After which time, the coins went back to their previous lower grades.
My hope for you is that my guess is wrong.

Maybe I submitted them as a regrade? I’m traveling this week and will have to look at my printout when I get home.
The coin in question was a Judd-405 1C that went from PF63 to PF64. My intent was a reholder to show the reeded edge as it was in an older style holder (not OGH). I’ll take it!
Are you insinuating that David Hall or PCGS did something unethical?
Not at all. It was an input error on the part of PCGS, which David Hall was in the process of correcting. I’ll edit my previous post to make that clear - thank you.

You can do regrade, it is pretty much the same price for low price coin. That way you might get a higher grade.
This is either an error on my end or PCGSs end. I thought I submitted it as a reholder and I will confirm when I am home Thursday. It may have been an input error on PCGSs part by entering a reholder as a regrade. Im not upset, the value of the coin went up by close to $5K, so I won't fight it either way. It was CACed as a PF63, so maybe I lose the CAC sticker if it won't qualify again.
So....I just confirmed that my submission was a Reholder submission.
I had 2 coins on this sub and maybe they changed the type of submission due to one request.
Coin 1: 1864 Copper Nickel 1C PF65. This coin is bronze and I wanted them to do a metallurgic analysis for confirmation (which they did and charged $250 for "outside examination"). This coin is a thick planchet and should have been graded as a J-356a which was indicated on the submission. I sent in supporting evidence and wanted them to reholder this appropriately as it was not done correctly the first time it was graded. Coin was assigned a PF65BN grade. They also charged me a Guarantee premium on this coin, even through the value decreased by $1250 per the guide (not happy to see this).
Coin 2: 1865 J-405. Sent in as PF63 (CAC and Photoseal), Regraded to PF64 with no guarantee for CAC or Photoseal now. They also charged me $250 for "outside examination" on this coin (not sure what for). They increased the service level as the value is now $10K, charged $100 for the guarantee premium on this.
What the heck do I do with this?
I feel like there was so much wrong with this submission and my invoice:
1.) Service type was incorrectly entered by PCGS - submitted as reholder and entered as regrade.
2.) guarantee premium on a coin that went down in value by $1250. If this was submitted as a PCGS guarantee submission, would they have had to pay me $1250 for them incorrectly designating the coin?!?
3.) Charged $250 for outside examination on one coin that didn't need it.
4.) Because this was incorrectly entered by PCGS, I was charged regrade fees, not reholder fees. Also charged guarantee premiums, increase in service level, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy I got an upgrade, but this was a lot of unexpected charges on this submission.
Anyone have ideas on how I should approach customer service with this one?
You should relay to PCGS all of the information you posted here. That sure sounds like a lot of miscues and overcharging.

"Outside examination"...at $250 each? Isn't PCGS supposed to be the one-stop shop for identifying, authenticating, and grading? What could an outside evaluator have that PCGS does not?
Collector, occasional seller
the rest of the story? did they recognize it as a CuNi pattern?
No, they didn’t recognize it as a thick planchet Bronze, just a normal 1864 BR 1C at PF65BN.
