leave it right where it is, not worth trying to cross
I assume you would try to cross into CAC or Pcgs

Looks like the one I sold raw a couple years ago that was acid dated.

It's not obvious in the pic but the date area does appear darker than the rest of the coin. Even with the acid treated date, I imagine that it's still worth a few hundred dollars.

If it's being sold on eBay, will the PCGS authentication reviewers reject this coin?

Low grade, nic-a-date processed? Would Anacs, NGC, PCGS mention the treatment and body bag it? Does market grading care?

I am not sure it is acid treated. I would have to see in hand to be sure! I not sure anyone could be sure from that photo !

look at the date which would never be that strong if it were not for the chemical enhancement. Have you ever seen a lowly good or good plus buffalo with a date that strong? I hav'nt.

Having said that it is still an excellent job of restoration. Has apparently added a lot of pizzaz and value to the
co n, er I meant coin.

I read in the big discussion that the authenticity guarantee will verify that the slab is authentic and not scrutinize the coin within the slab.

100% acid treated. They did a good job of it, though.

I agree. I’ve seen some terrible acid treated Buffalos over the years. Nice silver color over the date but the rest of the coin is an off grey making it stand out. This one isn’t to bad.
Here is one I have some time ago that the whole coin was done. It turned out really well. I’m surprised more are not done like this to make the surface color even.

My initial thought was acid treated date. But looks decent.

Slipped by into a straight grade holder. If it was in a details holder as acid treated, it should get a sticker.

The roundness of the restored digits is a dead giveaway that it is acid treated.

Who gets CAC stickered ? ANACS or SEGS or ICG ? Or just PCGS & NGC ?

    Obviously acid treated, ICG fail.

    CAC doesn’t sticker detail-grade coins.

Why? Unless it's not an overrated. They don't regrade the coins

    CAC doesn’t sticker detail-grade coins.

I don't think any of the stickering services do, but the coin does stand above most other acid dated nickels.

here is what happens when you are acid treating a buffalo nickel and you do not rinse it properly or rinse it at all.

For some years now, I have noticed key acid-treated buffalo nickels touched up to appear original.

Bizarrely, I have also in recent years seen some acid-treated Liberty nickels but it appears the success rate for them seems quite a bit lower than for buffalo nickels.

You might let him know that it's been acid treated although he probably already knows this since he might have been the one that acid-treated it..

Take the money and run or counter offer at a little under what auction records are for other same grade certifieds. It's "in the holder" so that gives some confidence.
