Help with 1830 Bust half dime attribution

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,489 ✭✭✭✭✭

I believe this is an obverse 1 due to the zero in the date being high. But due to the extensive wear, the dentils and star pick up points are baffling me. The reverse kind of resembles the J reverse in the attribution I am looking at due to the "RI" position? My uneducated conclusion points to a JM-5. I'd appreciate another interpretation by one of our resident experts! Here she is:

    I agree, 1830 LM-5.
Reverse J because of S2S-4 and scroll position.
Obverse 1 because S6 rotated clockwise.

Check out @Bikergeek's online attribution tool if you have not seen it:
    https://groovycoins.com/attribution?year=1830
(scroll down to see the S2S Mapper and Scroll Mapper)

You can also see an LM-5 plate photo:
    https://groovycoins.com/lm-xref?year=1830&lm=LM-5
It has the 0 high as you noted.

The attribution tool does not use 0 high as one of the markers for Obverse 1.
Maybe it is because "830 successively higher" is used as a marker for Obverse 4.

Thank you! I hadn't noticed the cud and die crack but there are faint remnants visible in the pic. I should have it in hand this weekend. Thanks for the links.

1830 is, IMHO, the toughest year to attribute. But at the risk of being disagreeable, I'm thinking that one is an LM-4.2. Reverse J I agree - but I think it's obverse 2. There is wear, which makes it tougher, but the pickup point I look for is the little crack on the bottom part of Star 1. Frankly, the "rotation" of stars is harder than heck for me to discern and I always doubt myself.

There's another pickup point: the die chip in the upper loop of S2 (the second S in STATES on the reverse) applies to Reverse J, as we already determined - but it doesn't happen until well after LM-5 uses that reverse. In fact, it first appears in LM-4.2. https://groovycoins.com/reverse-die.jsp?die=J

This is disagreeable because LM-5 is a rarity-6 issue, and LM-4.2 is only rarity 2. Sorry!

Other pickup points for the obverse include the position of stars 1, 7, 8, and 13 relative to the dentils they point to. Harder to see here - but as I was examining your coin I noted the proximity of the stars to the edge agrees more with LM-4.x than it does to LM-5.

But I'll close with this: @Manorcourtman , any friend of the baby busties is a friend of mine!

The tell-tale die crack at star 1 is there, just need to examine closely …4.2

@Bikergeek and the others have it right with LM 4.2.
4.2 also has S6 rotated clockwise....
I am guilty of trying to do the attribution with just the online tool,
instead of getting the LM book off the shelf!
And the book has so many more markers to check for.
