A rare coin treasure hunt offering $40,000 in prizes is about to begin in four cities. Numismatics (the study or collection of currency) enthusiasts in and around Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Boston can take part in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Treasure Hunt 2026.

Miami: October 6 through 10
The hunt will begin in Miami. From October 6 through 10, treasure hunters will have to scour the Magic City using their knowledge of the region’s rich history of shipwreck treasure. In 2025, 1,000 silver coins, five gold coins, and other gold artifacts were found off Florida’s Treasure Coast. The area is full of artifacts from a Spanish fleet that sank during a hurricane in 1715.
Philadelphia: October 13 through 17
Philadelphia is up next, from October 13 through 17. The City of Brotherly Love is the home to the United States Mint (1792), and many of today’s coins are still struck here. Quarters, dimes, or nickels made in Philadelphia will have a “P” on the coin’s reverse or tails side.
San Francisco: October 20 through 24
From there, it’s westward to San Francisco from October 20 through 24. No stranger to treasure hunts, knowledge of the 1849 Gold Rush should help. In 2024, a rare $20 double eagle gold coin made during the California Gold Rush sold for for $1.44 million—about 70,000 times its initial value
Boston: October 27 through 31
The final stop is Boston, October 27 through 31, closing the hunt in one of the oldest cities in the United States. A small silver coin that was struck in 17th century Boston and discovered in a 21st century cabinet sold for $2.5 million dollars in 2024.
How to participate
Participation in the treasure hunt is free and hunters can sign up for exclusive updates and early clues on Stacks Bowers website. You can also follow each individual gallery’s Instagram pages (Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston) to receive clues.
Just like the Witter hunt, clues will be posted on Instagram. I hate this timeline.
Surprised SB didn't include New York City for a treasurer hunt. NYC has a huge collector base.

I love the concept, but unfortunately a promotion like this is too region-specific. It's not worth travelling for and obviously they can't do it in every major city.
It's a clever way for them to drive people to meet with them, with dozens or hundreds of people making contact while they only have to give away one prize. But, as far as I'm concerned, it's a lot of squeeze for very little juice, given only one person per day can win. Running all over a city chasing a certificate. Far easier to grab a giveaway at a show in return for providing your contact information.

Maybe they can do different cities every year if they make it an annual thing.
It's not a scavenger hunt for the sake of a scavenger hunt. It's a marketing promotion. They therefore won't be doing it in cities where they don't have a physical presence.
Why not? Don't they want to market nationwide? Not all of their customers are local.
Because, if you read their rules carefully, they have people at the drop sites to meet the winners and the runners-up. Probably to invite them into the office to try to convert them into customers. As well as to force the winners to come to the office to pick up their prize.
If you only know them from shows and online auctions, you don't realize they also have a retail operation, with B&M stores in several cities. THAT is what they are promoting with this. Not flying staff to a city near you to put people up in a hotel for a week in order to give one person a day a prize in return for their personal information.
That's why not. All of their customers are certainly not local, but their scavenger hunts absolutely are. As are their stores.
I am pissed too! LOL! They are most likely trying to drum up some business in those locations. But they are forgetting about the big guns like you Oreville.
