Actually, the reason I bought it in 2013 was because of the CAC gold sticker. I did not realize it was a PCGS 1.0 ultra rare and earliest generation rattler at the time. I totally forgot about it until I viewed my Heritage “collection.”
I am sure I never sold it before as I treasured the gold stickered PCGS slabs. I was in shock when I saw it.

@oreville Great Collections has a common date Morgan in a MS64 holder over $5k right now. According to the description, PCGS was believed to start numbering at 1080001. By GC's logic, your coin is likely one of the first thousand coins graded by PCGS.

I am hesitant in selling this rare slabbed nickel as i would have to pay a huge 28% capital gains tax unless I first relocate to Puerto Rico.

Some unfortunate turns of events caused me to sell everything (wife abruptly left.) It was really hard on me, took me a few years to get back at it. Sadly, I sold all my old holder collection, including all the white tags, slabs, doilies, rattlers, etc. I now own one Doily, as a memento. I can’t pay what people are asking for those anymore (especially the white tags…wow! Wish I had those back.)

Considering what similar issues have sold for in the right auction, I'd strike while the iron is hot.

Oreville IS an accountant. He has also made comments in the past that coins no longer qualify for tax-deferred exchanges anymore.

Is that because it was the earliest slab still in existence? I remember something about that. I didn’t include it, since it’s an outlier.

The very early slab number was certainly a factor in the final hammer, how much only the bidders would be able to say. But other early cert numbered holders like the one in the op would likely see a value bump from this recent result even if it is somewhat of an outlier.

This is another 1938-D buffalo nickel in PCGS MS-65 rattler with a gold sticker I bought at the Heritage sale in January 2013. It set me back for all of $123.00 back then. There are even more gold stickered buffalo nuckels I bought back in 2013. Some were under $100.00.

Up to 2012 (not sure of the exact year), section 1031 exchange was allowed but afterwards US Congress changed the law no longer permitting any like kind exchange except for real estate.
