For the Morgan Dollar experts, how rare is the 1888-O Scar Face Latest DS (VAM 1B H10)?

I might be asking a question that is impossible to answer definitively but it would be nice to know how many exist at this moment in time. I am not interested in what Leroy Van Allen or other noted authors affiliated with VAMS reports since their rarity numbers typically extremely aged and unreliable imo. But i would think that this variety stands out on its own and should be able to document with some accuracy, its just I have not been collecting Morgan's long enough to know. And to add they seem to come in MS when they do appear, maybe someone would also know the highest graded known too. Thank you.

    It is likely under 100 in MS condition. Apparently these MS examples came from treasury released bags in the late 50's or early 60's. That would be easy to understand since the die was failing. Lesser graded or non LDS would be numbered higher of course.
    Hope you find a wild one !!

    I found a wild one some ten years or so ago. Sent to our host and graded MS63. Sold on Great Collections for $10,000+.

    I think MS64 is the highest graded yet. Sorry I didn't answer that in the first post.

    The best I have found in the wild is Harrison Stage 6. Still dreaming of finding the VLDS Harrison Stage 10, though Stage 9 will suffice.

    I have only ever had exactly one example in TRUE late die-state. And it sold for a princely sum - what, ten years ago or so?

    I have an 1880-O but I am not famliar with specific VAM"S. Anyone have a picture of one? Does not seem to be listed in either PCGS or NGC variety lists. James

    My heading is incorrect, I meant to type 1888-o but when I tried to edit it the new feature didn't work, my apologies for the error.

    @CivilWarBuff, @seatedlib3991, @Rampage.
    Trying to discover how many of these are actual H-10(terminal die state) examples, would be extremely difficult as the grading companies, (at least in PCGS’s case), do not list that attribution on the label. Would be helpful if they did. Maybe there’s not enough expertise in determining the10 different stages outlined in the article by Ash Harrison.
    Anyway, just ran across this thread and wanted to post this picture of the 1888-O Vam1B H-10 LDS Scarface I cherry picked raw many years ago from a dealer’s bulk silver dollar box.
    This is a true terminal die state as no new evidence has come to light, showing the crack expanding any further than this on known examples.
    Zack.

    I assume you mean 1888-O Scarface (Not 1880).

    I sold an ANACS MS61 H8 several years ago for around $2500.

    You Suck! Awarded 6/2008- 1901-O Micro O Morgan, 8/2008- 1878 VAM-123 Morgan, 9/2022 1888-O VAM-1B3 H8 Morgan | Senior Regional Representative- ANACS Coin Grading. Posted opinions on coins are my own, and are not an official ANACS opinion.

    Would you also have a reverse photograph to post?

    The SSDC Registry census is currently this. You can see it broadly for the H10 stage and the basic statistics for all stages. It should give a decent relative picture.
