Another PCGS White Label - GC auction ended 9/20

I randomly opened this thread and read all the messages. I don't collect this series but checked a couple of price guides. I get " to each his own". I just need a little reset calibration.....it looks like a significant premium.... for the coin, the holder or the bean. Can someone give me a concise, rational reason for the price? Thanks, Keoj

@keoj: “rational” isn’t part of this one. The winning bidder wanted it enough to bid that high & appears to have had some serious competition.
What’s “special” about this coin?

it’s a very nice example & likely undergraded;
it has a gold bean;
it is among the first 200 coins or so graded by PCGS going back some 40 years.
As time goes by, that group of coins (generation 1.0) becomes more & more rare. There’s a dedicated group of collectors that seek these coins out.
These collectors must look at these coins/holders like they’re rare museum pieces. It gets down to whatever the highest bidder gets in as the final bid.
I’m guessing the winner is happy regardless of price. As said earlier, “rational” doesn’t really apply here, but each of us has a different version of what that might be. Emphasize “might”.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. The thinking is not how I think about coin collecting. While I understand the the premium for a bean and possibly a holder (which the bean somewhat addresses), it just feels peripheral to the core asset. If the core asset is the holder, then I'm just limited in my perspective. Thanks for the context. Keoj

It's not any less rational than spending over face value for any coin. Different people choose to collect different things. And sometimes, they're going to choose something you wouldn't have.

It's not the plastic, it's the labels in the plastic. Just as collectors pay a large premium for low or consecutively numbered serial numbers on currency, there are a good number of coin collectors who are willing to pay a hefty premium for certain labels. The early labels -- whether in PCGS or NGC holders -- are just as rare as a rare date coin.

While the label is in fact rare, the label is not a coin.

And to think, I was stunned last year when my $45 Merc went for $1150 w/o the juice on GC (who knew the 108s were so coveted, not me). Some told me it was low for the cert #:

But the white labels and getting closer to 1080000 just costs even crazier amounts. Open question is whether this will last or will prices for the White Labels start to come down, and how far...........

Your coin is a PCGS Gen 1.2 with a 108 certification. A really nice coin to have, and certified and holdered in the first month or two of PCGS's beginning, but not a Gen 1.0 or 1.1 White Label. Still, it is worth much more than a similar coin in a later holder. A great find and highly sought after.
