I just bought my first ancient coin out of the Heritage ANA auction. It's a beautiful denarius with the portrait of Caesar minted prior to his assassination. I am super excited to have this one. It's in great condition for a 2000+ year coin with all the history to boot. I stretched to get it but don't we have to get the nice ones! Here are the images from HA:

    WOW! I am not an ancients guy, but I saw that coin and I agree it looks fantastic and is like an 11 out of 10 on the cool history scale!

    I saw that coin at the Heritage preview. Color, strike and condition are superb.

    Absolutely breathtaking.


    After all I went through to finally win this one in a European auction, after repeatedly getting crushed on venues like Heritage, CNG, etc., I can only imagine what THAT beauty cost.


    My much-humbler example represented the just right middle-of-the-road balance for me. It was nice enough , without being TOO nice and therefore out of my reach (as yours most certainly would have been). I put up with a banker's mark, a few faint scratches, and a somewhat ragged flan, but I got a coin from JC's lifetime, within just a few weeks of the assassination, and with a decent portrait and his full name and obverse legend on the flan.





    For those who aren't into ancients, let's just say I was happy to get mine for under $2K. So I can only guess what the example in the OP must have gone for!

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    Yes. I paid a lot for the coin. I’m buying to keep as a collector and it’s something that is such an important piece of history. Yours has the veiled portrait and the “dictator for life” motto. Love it !

    Congrats! I viewed this denarius at the ANA and it has truly exceptional eye-appeal and, while Heritage's images are good, it's much more attractive in-hand.

    I've been collecting ancient Greek and Roman coins now for a few years, and your new coin is the pinnacle of what I would consider to be one of the most important coins in Western Civ. Wow!

    I love the coinage analogies between the Western Roman Empire and the Weimar Republic, except that it didn't take Weimar nearly as long to collapse as it did Rome.
