The "third side" of a coin
How much of a factor,if any, is that condition figured into the overall grade of the coin? Would a gouge or two located there knock a 68 coin to say a 64?
Would most collectors balk at a gouged edge coin while the obv/rev are otherwise flawless?

A "gouge" could take it down to details.

Rim hits can be the "kiss of death" for early copper... details.

If rim damage is present but not quite extensive enough to result in a "details" grade, my experience is that the overall silent net grade suffers very little from minor dings, dents or edge distractions.
Long ago, I once bought a fairly elusive classic-head large-cent certified at VF-35 by ANACS and it appeared severely undergraded - like AU with luster! Naturally I cracked it out with the intent to get it upgraded, only to discover rim damage that had resulted in the commercial net.

i don't think a small issue with the rim is a big deal, but pcgs does detail filed rims(i agree fully) and rim damage
The “third side” of a coin is its edge, not its rim. So far, I’ve seen three replies referencing “rim” but none, the “edge”. I thought that the subject of this thread was supposed to be the latter.

I've never seen a details-worthy edge gouge, scratch, or damage. Ex jewelry pieces that feature mounting (solder or reengraved reeds) is the only thing worth noting. Otherwise you can ignore everything on the edge as far as I'm concerned.

in the rare event only the edge and not the rim is damaged, I would think a small ding wouldn't matter at all. if it looks like a tunnel towards coin alteration then i'd suspect it would
