Terrific half eagle, congrats on your acquisition. My only slabbed civil war date coin is this lone AU gold dollar; and I have a couple of coins from that time in my 7070.

Ok - here is the backstory to this coin. A long time ago, I was thinking about collecting half Eagles and I came across this coin. I fell in love with this coin. I didn't realize how rare it was. I got it CAC'd and I am still in love with it. I now know how tough it is and it not been scrubbed nor cleaned. I learned that it was sitting in a leather pouch for over 75 years before I bought it. Pretty cool.
All of the coins are very nice. The 1861 and 1862 dollars are very tough to get, especially nice like these! I've had 1854,55 and 56 Seated dollars, but never 1861 or 1862. Mine were fines and very fines. .

I actually don't know if it is a proof. I bought it 1987 rom Jonathan Kern, raw, and he didn't mention he thought it could be a proof. It is still ungraded.

As I mentioned, I don't know if it is a proof. The seller (dealer Jonathan Kern) did not mention this when I bought it from him back in 1987. It is still un-slabbed.
Sorry Eddie, I missed your second post. I believe it is although I didn't pull out the proof pups to be sure but based on its appearance and that a business strike being the rarer of the 2 I am comfortable that its a proof.
Thank you. I live in the general area of where the battle was held. In the early 80s I went to the museum. They had these medals available for $3. They only had a few left. I wish now I had bought them all.

The strike on the 1861 Silver Dollar is particularly sharp. I went to the website Liberty Seated Dollar varieties, but got a security warning about a suspicious site.
Nice toning in a range of conditions! I used to be primarily a Liberty Seated Collector. I get a kick out of the different mint mark sizes. I find the very large mint marks to be particularly awesome. I had the 62-s,64-S and 65-S at one time.
