Possibly the first strike uncirculated 1971-S and 1971-D Eisenhower dollars were provisionally identified. There are now possibly five presentation sub-classes of 1971 Eisenhower dollars.

Curiously, does PCGS certify any of these as specimen strikings?

Wonderful research and great article! Thank you. Can't wait to read PNRF Case Study No. 7 when it comes out.

For those reading along, for additional context on the dates in the article:
The first official production of Ike proofs for collectors was in September 1971 (2,180 minted), followed in December 1971 (1,219,990 minted), with the balance of the total 1971-S proof Ike production completed in March and June of 1972.

It is likely that all of the 1971-S proof Ike dollars mentioned in the article were produced prior to the standard for-collector Ike proof production runs. This is supported by the fact that all / most of the Ike proof in the brown Nixon presentation boxes (with embossed presidential seal and Nixon signature) are known to have a Type 1 reverse.
