Population report cooperation and reconciliation between TPGs

What kind of collaboration and cooperation (or lack thereof) are you aware of between the various TPGs re: population report reconciliation?

I crossed a coin in an NGC holder to CACG recently. CACG returned the original NGC label to me, and a few weeks later I noticed the coin vanished from NGC's certification database (and presumably, NGC's population report).

I'm glad that happened automatically and to see a little "behind the scenes" cooperation, as I don't need to contact NGC myself (and most folks wouldn't). Of course, that can't happen I'd cracked out the coin myself before submitting.

As I haven't crossed or cracked many coins between TPGs, just curious to hear more about it.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Really? I'm not to sure about this. I would double check that.

In a perfect world, maybe. I didn't think there is any collaboration or cooperation (or very little) between all the TPG'ers. I think they are all doing their own thing and making a concerted effort to be different and unique from one another!

It would be to much work and to convoluted to keep the pop reports up-to-date and accurate.

    BTW: I hate going first! 🤣 😂

You’re right, so I’m glad you went first. I just tried again and it pulled up this time, so I either miskeyed it earlier (although I did double-check the number), or it was a temporary database lookup glitch.

I guess my updated question is: how do I get NGC to remove the coin?

I don't know the relevant TPG policies. But I own coins that have been certified more than once. In some cases the old certs are still active, in other cases not. I'd like to think the TPGs would inform each other when a coin crosses. Even if they do, crackouts and resubmissions surely have made the specific numbers unreliable in many cases.

One area in which inter-TPG communication may be desireable has to do with the registries. I would think that each would want to know current certification status of coins being added. I wouldn't be surprised if there are coins that have been downgraded still in a registry with their old certs.

I don't see why any of the TPGs would ever care.

I agree it is of interest to those who own these coins, but it's up to them to send labels from cross overs and crack outs.

I just can't see them taking the time, manpower and effort to do that. Can't see where that would help their bottom-line. It's all about the $ 💵 💰🤑

Sigh... they do it all the time. Send in the label. At one point, they were even buying back the labels in order to encourage submission of the labels.

    PCGS at least still does.

That might be true. TPG'ers try to keep their online population reports current by updating databases automatically whenever a coin is graded or encapsulated... However, these totals reflect only certified submissions, meaning crack-outs, crossovers, and raw coin attrition are never fully subtracted in real time.

I thought once upon a time you simply sent in the old certs and they would remove them.

This was actually discussed quite thoroughly on the CAC forum, CACG proposed automatically sending the certs of coins crossed to CACG back to NGC and PCGS and they wanted feedback. It was proposed as a way to help cleanup and possibly restore some level of accuracy to the pop reports. As the feedback was overwhelmingly against doing so they; as you now know; do as the other TPG's and return the old certs to the submitter. And just as it is with coins crossed to NGC or PCGS it is up to the submitter to return the certs to the original TPG.
