Help! Why's it look like Washington's Got Stiches

Matt04Matt04 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭✭

I picked up this phenomenal 1948 Philly Washington Quarter earlier today. There’s just one unusual feature that caught my attention: what appears to be a crack running through Washington’s jaw. Any idea what could have caused this? I’ve never seen anything quite like it before.

A small lamination. Fairly common. Essentially no impact on value (larger laminations can actually hurt the value of a coin)

Assuming it affects grade though, although its not considered post mint damage?

A coin like that is considered as-struck.

Nominally it would not affect the grade. I suppose a small lamination like that one might keep a coin out of an ultra-high grade, such as 67 or higher. I'm not even sure about that. Your coin has multiple spots and other marks unrelated to the lamination. Those would certainly limit the grade. The lamination is incidental in comparison.

Might as well keep this thread going.
