Is this coin worth sending to "PCGS or NGC" or sell for silver content?

Attached please note the ear canal has lost its luster, and the metal seems to be a different grade. Appears to be gray color in color, with what looks like oil spots.

Your thoughts would really be appreciated!!

    Homer,

    The bad news is that you do not have a doubled die variety or an Accented Hair variety. You do not have a good eye for detail, so finding most varieties and errors is going to be off limits for you. At your stage of collecting, you should consider submitting any coins to PCGS and NGC to be off limits as well.

    The good news is that coin collecting is a very broad hobby, with many paths you can take that do not require an eye for detail or submitting coins. For example, filling a Whitman folder is a fun project for many beginning collectors.

    Good luck finding your path going forward as you leave the varieties and errors behind. And remember to have fun!

    Just remember, there are several different types of doubling, most of the doubling you find will be the common types that really don't garner any collector interest or value. Varieties and errors are quite advanced areas of numismatics and not something you can jump right into with any hope for success. If you are truly interested in varieties like doubled dies, then a lot of study will be necessary before you can confidently identify them. There are good reference sites like doubleddie.com, and varietyvista.com for varieties and other sites that cover errors if that is to your liking.

    You're welcome, Homer.

    Brain surgery is all well and good, but I would encourage you to pursue coin collecting as a fun hobby rather than a career. If you find a niche where you are really having fun, you may one day learn enough to make money at it.
