Will My Buffs Continue to Tone in a Dansco?

I am working on a set of raw, toned Buffalo nickels. Most of them already are very colorful, some are light rainbows, some are solid gold or blue, and a few are virtually white. I'm collecting them in a new Dansco album.

What will happen to these coins over time? Will they continue to tone darker? Will they remain colorful? Will they stabilize? (Has the composition of the cardboard changed over time?)

Any input from nickel collectors who have watched Dansco-housed pieces develop would be much appreciated!!!!

I've had a raw set of circ Buffs in a Dansco for more than 12 years and have not really noticed any change, but then, most of them are in the VF-EF range and not are AU/BU, which I think would be more susceptible to changes. I also have a BU set of Jeffs in a Dansco, but have not really detected many changes, but then, that set is only 2-3 years old. BU Roosies and Washingtons I have in a Dansco are displaying toning -- some nice, some not so nice. For toning you do not want, while still keeping in a Dansco, I would recommend Kointains, BNE.
  • If I remember correctly, they no longer use paper that is cured or contains sulfur, only the older albums were made this way. Correct me if i'm wrong.image

i am artificially toning a set of jeffersons in a dansco album. progress is slow!

your coins will likely continue toning, but the pace of chemical reaction should decelerate until it reaches a point where the coins will seem stable

  • Karl,

Thats Ok, I managed to buy an empty dynamite wooden box and have dumped 400 BU morgans in it. I figure in about 15 or 20 years, I'll have some real gems....Then the craze will be over and i'll have tarnished morgansimage

Almost all paper manufactured today is alkaline in nature and this has been the case for probably 25 years. Therefore, you will have your coins tone relatively slowly in the Dansco.

Maybe it's just been my experience, and I know it happens faster with silver, but Dansco's have tended to tone my coin brown. I admit, I didn't try to climate control the environment -- but under ordinary temperatures (that which is comfortable to us) my SAEs and SBAs and some State quarters are toning.

If the Dansco is improperly stored then your coins will continue to tone. By this I mean that the book needs to be stored in a moisture free environment, which can be accommodated by placing it in a Zip Lock bag along with a desiccant. Otherwise, in a few years your nice rainbows might become brown.

Thanks for the input everyone! I sure don't want them to turn brown! I guess I will leave them where they are for right now (but will do the Ziploc/dessicant thing), and when my set is complete, or nearly so, I will transfer them somewhere safer like an Intercept book or a Capital holder or something.

I don't want to slab them because I like to look at all the colors at the same time.

    Thanks again!
