                                                                                  A TALE OF TWO SHIPS

Tote Ships arrive at the Port of Anchorage twice each week. Assisting them navigate in the Cook Inlet harbor are moored Tug Boats.

In this below linked video playlist filmed this week watch as one of the tug boats returns to its mooring dock as the huge Tote RORO (roll on roll off) ship “North Star” departs with the dozens, if not hundreds, of trailers and vehicles that have been loaded for its journey to Tacoma, Washington.

One should not underestimate the importance to Alaska's economy of the twice weekly Tote Ships that sail from Tacoma to Anchorage. 90% of the goods that come to Alaska arrive by Marine vessels and 50% of those goods are transported by the two Tote ships "Midnight Sun" and "North Star." (Only 5% of our goods arrive by truck over the highway and 5% by air.).
FWIW, all of my vehicles arrived here in Alaska by having been transported on one of these two TOTE ships.
Also of note, both of these ships, which constitute the entire fleet of based in Alaska Tote Marine Alaska, were converted to operate by clean burning LNG (liquified natural gas).

The port turnaround time for these cargo carrying ships is the fastest in the industry at 8 hours. This is made possible by all of the cargo being loaded and unloaded by being driven on and off the ships rather than having containers loaded by cranes as is the case with most cargo ships. As opposed to container cargo ships, these are, as noted above, roll on, roll off cargo ships (RORO.)

The ships have 13 ramps which help to facilitate the unloading and loading of the equivalent of 6 football fields of cargo carrying space on each of the Tote ships.
