Another record set for 108 rattler holder - almost 35k!

An incredible result tonight at GC- a first gen (1.0) rattler (with the 108 cert) sold for almost $35k! That is the most I have seen for a half dollar and is the third highest result on GC behind the 17th slabbed coin (Morgan) and a gold CAC Double Eagle.

Wow, $25 for the half and $34,950 for the holder. Now I get the big money spent on the first generation Apple computers and things like that, even though they have no functionality today, but this is extreme paying for the wrapper.

To think I had a couple of these about 10 years ago and was happy to get 2-3x what the coin was worth. They were purchased from large dealer auctions at that. Talk about a parabolic increase in price. These somewhat went under the radar with the rest of the rattlers back then.
There are people out there with money to literally burn. This is nothing but pocket change for high rollers!

Apparently the purchaser hasn’t gleaned any knowledge from this forum and didn’t know you always purchase the coin and NOT THE HOLDER! Sheeesh……lol 😂

I never liked rattlers and amazed they spend that kind of money on them.
Got rid of any had decades ago.
Just think what that would buy in MS70 CACG 1oz Gold Eagles.
I kinda get why people go after these (although not necessarily to the tune of 500x the value of the coin).
What I don’t get is why the TPG stuff that predates 108 rattlers and NGC black holders don’t get a little more love.
I know it’s all collectible…….but some of the first/earliest TPG photograde certificates can be had for 3% of this hammer price. That I don’t really get if we’re collecting the history of TPGs.
It’s probably all fun money to the buyer so I totally get it. Some people buy mochas in the morning and some people buy 108s in the evening.
I dunno. 35K is a lot of money, but can you really think of something else you would rather have at that price? Really? Show me.

It’s a brand thing-PCGS and NGC are the best known with the most popularity so they bring more money even if an Anacs photo cert is older.
This thread made me go through some of my old slabs and lo and behold. I found this which was simply randomly with some other late date mercs.

35k can get you so many cool coins. A chain cent, 1796 small eagle quarter. I can’t imagine taking my 35k and buying an old piece of plastic encapsulating a common coin.

The # is higher than the one showing in the 1.1 pop (#2378). Concur with your conclusion.

I think it is generation 1.1 though not 1.0 based on the 108 prefix. As far as I can determine from my research, all of the 108 slabs are generation 1.1 or 1.0 and this number may be a new highest certified 1,1 ? I do not think it is a 1.2 based on the color and the lack of ribs on the label.
The old slab web site says
Generation 1.1 - Very Rare.
Produced for about a week in Feb 1986. This white label features an improved quality dot matrix print. Approx 1400 were originally slabbed with the highest know cert # being 1082378. Current census figures put the number of survivors known at 56.
