Do you consider 1909-S V.D.B. essential to make for a complete date/mint set of Lincolns, 1909-1940?

And yes, it absolutely belongs in a complete set of Lincoln Cents.

I think the 1909-S VDB should be considered more as a variety.

How is it a variety if it was the first minted?

In my opinion, regardless of when the 1909-S VDB cent was minted, its type is Wheat Cents and it’s a variety of the first year of its type.

You want to talk yourself into “no” because you sold yours and don’t want to spend the bucks to fill the hole.

Here's the way I look at it.

I traded so-called "completeness" of my Lincoln penny collection for an experience that I cannot put a dollar value on. The penny I can replace if I choose to do so. The concert experience all the way from the planning of it to me actually "being there" with my guest?

    Irreplaceable. Priceless. B)

Yes - A compete set is not complete without the completeness. Complete is all included.
You can't complete a round of golf without playing the 18th hole. You can't complete a game of bowling without playing the 10th frame. You can't complete a lincoln cent album without all the coins required to complete it.

Try selling your incomplete set as complete without a 1909-S-VDb and see how far you get!.

EVERY coin is a variety. Variety doesn't require there to be 2 different varieties.

A no Cents nickel is ALSO a one year type

They mean different things. Type is a specific design. Variety is a variation of the type. But you can have a Type 1 without a Type 2. And you can have a Variety 1 without a Variety 2.

So a VDB is Type 1, Variety 1,2...
No VDB would be Type 2, Variety 1, 2...

Why didn't the OP also mention the 1909 VDB? I guess it's too cheap to not include.

If he doesn't care about completeness, why not just collect a type set of Lincolns?

Okay @Twobitcollector that's good, not bad. Here's the method to my madness! 😂 😉 👍

This is the back of my 7070. I take a picture of the slab, print out the picture, break out the coin, scotch tape the labels to the pictures and put the pictures in a clear sleeve in the back of the albums.

Why is there no opening for 1909 V.D.B. DDO like there is for 1955 DDO in the Whitman album for Lincoln cents minted 1941 and later? I'm thinking of relabeling my Whitman #9405 by covering 1909-S V.D.B. label with a 1909 V.D.B. DDO label and then seeking out an example of it to fill that hole in the album. I have a nice 1909 V.D.B. DDO but it's in an ANACS slab that I don't intend to crack. My first step would be to just cover the SVDB label with a label for 1909 V.D.B. DDO and then put a tiny sticker on the 3.1 gram planchet already in place which would indicate that I have the DDO piece in a slab.

1909 cent with V.D.B. is represented as first type of Lincoln cent and right next to it 1909 V.D.B. DDO represented as first error of the first type. This makes more sense to me than fretting about not having an expensive, vastly overrated, just-a-variety of 1909 mintmarked 'S' cent in my album. Someone asks me where is my SVDB I show pictures of my first SVDB, the counterfeit in a slab I once owned along with pictures of the genuine piece (replaced the counterfeit) that I sold to help cover expenses for the concert I attended.

If the 1909S VDB was not expensive would you include it in your album to keep the set complete?

    There's your answer.

By all means, collect what you want. But please don't try to convince us of something just to placate your conscience.

Personally, I'd never sell my soul or even a trophy coin from an album just to see a concert. If I had Taylor Swift tickets I'd sell them and buy something nice for my collection (or invest it for retirement).

If the 1909S VDB was not expensive would you include it in your album to keep the set complete.

1909 SVDB has always been an expensive coin ever since I was a kid in the 1960's trying to find one to fill the hole for it in my Whitman folder.

The quest for completeness is an exercise in futility it seems. I saw selling my expensive coin as my best choice to make the concert experience happen for me and my guest. My SVDB was well circulated, only fine condition. I considered it a perfectly acceptable piece for my LC collection, however. I sold it with no regrets for about twice as much as I paid for the slabbed counterfeit that it replaced.

I consider that my Lincoln collection has a new kind, a better kind of completeness going for it now. B)

I think at some point you have to stop worrying about how everyone else interprets your collection. If you're satisfied with it and consider it complete for your purposes, that's really all that matters. I say this as someone who deliberately started a Large Cent album knowing full well when I bought it that I will almost certainly never complete it. I'm perfectly comfortable with that. The empty holes don't diminish my enjoyment of the coins that are there.

That said, I think there's a distinction between "my collection is complete by the parameters I've chosen" and "this is a complete 1909–1940 Lincoln Cent set." If you ever sell it and describe it as the latter, I wouldn't be surprised when potential buyers point out that the 1909-S VDB isn't there. Whatever we call it technically... a date/mintmark variety, a major variety, etc. ..the 1909-S VDB has been treated as an integral part of the Lincoln series by collectors and album manufacturers for generations.

It reminds me of those old Whitman folders where some unobtainable hole practically mocked you... remember the word "RARE" printed on the tab. The 1916-D Mercury dime comes immediately to mind. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent and 1916 Standing Liberty quarter present similar problems depending upon how an album defines the set. Some albums include those spaces; others conveniently don't. Ultimately, collect whatever you want, put whatever you want in the album, and define your own collecting goals. If you never intend to sell it, the terminology probably doesn't matter much anyway. But once we ask other collectors whether they consider a set complete, we have to be prepared for the answer to be different from our own.

...And frankly, selling a coin to pay for an experience you valued more than owning the coin seems like a perfectly reasonable decision. You don't really need the rest of us to redefine "complete" to justify it.

You don't really need the rest of us to redefine "complete" to justify it."

For the record, I'm not trying to define "completeness" with regard to Lincoln cent collection for anyone other than myself. And I'm not worried about how others interpret my collection.

Why didn't the OP also mention the 1909 VDB? I guess it's too cheap to not include.

If he doesn't care about completeness, why not just collect a type set of Lincolns?

In the interest of completeness, 1909 V.D.B. DDO will be occupying the space in my album that was once for 1909-S V.D.B.

Take a lesson from Burger King. They tried replacing their regular burger meat with a vegan patty still referring to it a "Whopper"
    The consumer balked.
You can place your 1909 VDB DDO in the slot reserved for a 1909-S VDB and call it a complete set, but all other collectors will continue to see you as either delusional or a fool for doing so.

But did they start a "Hey! Look at me!" thread to go with it?

Really, it's just a labeling problem at the end of the day. I have listened. Not so much to you and your ilk but to the truly thoughtful insight presented in remarks by others in this forum. My Lincoln penny collection sans a 1909-S V.D.B., replaced by a 1909 V.D.B. DDO FS-1101, I shall call from this day forward,

"The New Kind of Complete" Lincoln penny collection. B)

You have now sunken to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent collectors.

And now that the statement has been made plain and simple for you, you're on your own to continue being as unenlightened as you choose.

I don't think this is fair. He may not be choosing to be unenlightened. It could be organic.
