My Summer Journey to Schererville, IN

1all1all Posts: 539 ✭✭✭

As someone who has mostly collected unopened material for the last 15 years, I have amassed a decent collection of boxes and rack packs - including many raw racks with stars on top/back. My stuff is small potatoes compared to Tim, Mike, or Chris, but I I'm pretty happy with it.

I always intended to make the pilgrimage from Maryland to Indiana but life (and procrastination) got in the way. When I saw Steve announce that he was going to pause authentication I knew that I had to cannonball across the country to drop off the goods. After driving through the night, I made it there just in time to drop everything off. Around 110 rack packs, 6 cello boxes, and a rack case. After hearing that people were dropping off pallets, I was not expecting Steve to get to my stuff until September/October, but I got an email mid July that it was all done.

Since Schererville is only about an hour from Chicago, I decided to hit the National for the first time since it was in Baltimore (2013?). I didn't have a game plan put together for the Natty so it became more of a museum tour than anything else. It was fun but next time I need to put in the work.

Anyway, I picked up my submission from the retail store on Saturday and headed back East. In my head, 110 rack packs, 6 boxes and a rack case didn't seem like a lot.... Until I started unpacking everything..... Below is what the haul looked like. I can take more pictures of the individual packs if anybody is interested.

That's an awesome haul of unopened, Doug! Some really cool items there, congrats! Sounds like a great trip and a cool idea vs shipping all that!

I always enjoy viewing other people's stuff so I can say "Got it, got it, need it, got it, need it, need it, need it, got it...."

    Very impressive.

Yea, it's filled with the traditional rack packs. I know that they never came in a box (just loose in a case) but I tried to see if Steve would wrap them in an '83 wax rack box with a notation on it. He didn't feel comfortable doing that which I understand completely. From my experience, the 1983 traditional rack packs are much more scarce than the wax rack version.

Man, oh man. That is something I would 100% look to buy too!

I will never forget when I underbid and 83 Donruss rack case One had a tony gwynn on top. I think I’ve bid like 550.

So many years ago that would be several thousand now.

That is an amazing collection! Also, great that you got to visit BBCE twice! I take it for granted (a bit) that I am only around 4 hours from Schererville. In May, I made a trip out there to drop off an auction consignment. It was so convenient just to drive out there to drop it off and not have to worry about something going wrong in transit. Then, I also stopped at the retail store and looked around and picked up a few cards.

I think it is a visit everyone should make whether you are an unopened fan or not.
