I would not. Yes, I know they have to start somewhere, but as a buyer, it's not worth the risk.

I'd take a risk on any seller if I thought the price was reasonable (and not a steal). I'd also pay attention to the location of the seller. Lastly I would message the seller and try to get a feel for their personality before committing to the deal.
Of course my bankers refer to me as "Mr. No Fees."1 -
Wow, so far in the running for worst thread ever. Let me try to salvage it. If the coin is of any value, NO. Yes everyone has to start at 0, but you can just start buying things and get that number up a bit. A zero is too likely a scam.

Coin rolls like that are unlikely to be covered because the seller can simply blame it on bad luck. I had to learn that the hard way when I was new to the hobby. When I mentioned buyer protection, I was referring to coins where the sellers’ pics hid hairlines, seller shipped wrong coin or nothing at all, and other such cases.

Depends on what it is and if they are selling other things with similar presentation. There are enough people that will not bid/by from sellers without a feedback of 10, you would probably get it for less.

It depends on many factors. If it's a seller in China selling a raw trade dollar, then NO! If the seller is in the US, the coin is slabbed by a major grading service, the pics are good quality, the price is reasonable, and it's something that Ive been looking for, then I'd probably buy it. The eBay guarantee is very good and my payment comes from my credit card which always has my back, so I'm double protected.

I have over 100,000 eBay transactions. eBay has backed the buyers in EVERY CASE, no matter how silly the complaint, including a buyer who returned a silver kilo FIVE MONTHS after purchase when silver went down on them. Even in cases where eBay was reticent, all the buyer has to do is file a chargeback and the CC company will ALWAYS back the buyer. There is very little risk (not zero) in any eBay transaction.
That said, you can mitigate risk by being careful on eBay. This includes things like feedback, common sense (deals that are too good to be true, etc.), avoiding expensive items from people without extensive histories, etc. Lots of threads full of advice in the archives.
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.

I just did. Bid on a PCGS graded coin that should have gone for at least twice what I paid. Seller had zero feedback when I won. Coin came as expected and well deserved positive feedback will be left.

Last month I bought something from a seller with no feedback and no previous sales. Lo and behold, it never got shipped, but after a month I made a claim and ebay refunded me promptly.
That being said it was a $60 lot of common raw coins and it seemed very reasonable for a random person to be selling it. If it were something expensive I wouldn't have done it.I collect world proof sets, coins featuring composers, mid-20th century U.S. proof coins, U.S. type coins, and whatever else I want.

eBay almost always backs buyers. As long as the listing raises no red flags (selling location, pictures, description, price relative to value), no issues.

I will add, at times eBay has also followed through on seller protections.
People complain about the fees, but they are worth it to create a relatively safe marketplace. When you consider that I've shipped over $2 million in COINS and PRECIOUS METALS around the entire globe with very little loss, I think it speaks volumes about the value of eBay.
