Are they silver?
Considering how Commemoratives in general are slotted it would be fair to say that even for the pristine examples they have seen better days with a few exceptions like the PanPacs and Hawaiian.
Yikes.... cheap bullion now.
I also have an Alabama to go with these but it's hiding from me now. All have been purchase at one time or the other over the years on eBay

Looks more like pencil eraser damage. It would make a good pocket piece to wear down some of the damage.
