What's the chances this is a legit sale? The seller has zero selling history on EBAY. I emailed him a couple of questions during the middle of the auction and he never responded to any of my questions. The back of the card does not look like the card that's on the PSA website.

A crappy picture with a $3000 price sticker. When was the last time this card was only $3000?

8s are now selling between $18k-$21k…so likely not legit. I had a private sale last week on one of my PSA-8 ‘68 Ryan Rookies for $17,900….the buyer texted me this afternoon that he sold the same card at the National today for $19,000. I had purchased that card in late March 2026 for $13,300 with sales tax.
Question on the the EBAY authentication process. So the seller of this card will have the card sent to the authentication process? This appears to be a scam so is the buyer protected or can the buyer still get scammed and be out of 14K? Does the seller get paid the 14K immediately after the buyer makes the payment? I'm not familiar with how EBAY works from the sellers perspective.
The seller is paid once the card is authenticated…and on its way to buyer. I assume the authentication process includes that the buyer receives the exact card on eBay.
So how can the scam actually work? Once the card is sent to the authenticator you would assume there's no way it gets authenticated unless the authentication process is just a complete joke. If that's the case why even attempt the scam? What am I missing and thank you for responding. I appreciate the knowledge you and others have given me over the years.

authentication should catch anything that may be amiss.

Stuff gets through authentication that should not. When that happens the buyer is 100% SOL with eBay.

I think Detective Yankees has uncovered another criminal activity. Well done sir! The card above is not the same as this Ryan RC on the Cert Verification.
Just to clarify, there's a white surface flaw in the purple area where METS is printed. Also a white fisheye on Jerry's cap. These flaws do not appear on the PSA verified example.
The seller lives in Anaheim, CA. That's close to the authenticator. They may know someone who has insight to the process that isn't public.

If it gets past authentication, shame on them. The holder is fake and the card is a reproduction.
If PSA does manage to catch in their 2 second cursory looksie Does the slab get returned to the seller so they can try again? Probably on the cesspools that are FB or Whatnot where they will succeed

Impact of Fraud Detection on Buyers and Sellers. PSA will catch it. Have had them catch stuff that I can’t believe on their review. Just bought a card that they sent me photos that said “damaged in holder” which I have no idea what that means or how it happens.. Got a full refund - no idea what is going on with the card but either way I am glad I didn’t try to have to deal with seller. They showed pictures of the photo above of the damage in a card that was an 8.

What's funny is I just saw a guy at the card show who had a stack of those for 5 bucks apiece. I picked up one as well as a lot of people as it was a great talking and show piece. They are strikingly real looking and I think the most reproductive card on the market. Never pick up a Ryan rookie unless absolutely sure it's real.
eBay has been lax in removing counterfeit coins from the site.

A long time ago they had zero tolerance for counterfeit/pirates/fake merch and associated scams, now they wont do anything that might impact their bottom line up to and including terrorizing dissenters.

I read a little about this years ago but don’t remember the details. What is the TLDR?
eBay is horrible for so many reasons but what you gonna do? Use Facebook and deal with old people smells? If there was a better option everyone would use it.
