Odd 1913 D Buffalo Nickel

This nickel was in my father's collection. It's not an error, obviously some post minting action. I was wondering if anyone can explain how this gold patina was added to the coin. The raised oval on the obverse side appears to be an integral part of the coin, not attached. Is this some type of artifact from electro plating? Thoughts appreciated.

    Buffalo Nickel cuff links used to be a "thing"
