HISTORY OF 4th OF JULY CELEBRATIONS IN ANCHORAGE ALASKA WITH VINTAGE PHOTOS

I was reminded that it is already the 4th of July in other parts of the world when I received a 4th of July related email from a YouTuber friend in Japan this morning, the 3rd of July here in Alaska. He shared that he had lived in a still standing colonial home near the nation’s capital in West Virginia’s first city of Shepherdstown.

Not too long ago I spent several days in the Anchorage Museum’s archives doing research that included viewing vintage photographs taken by Alaska artist Sydney Laurence during the first decade of Anchorage Alaska’s existence. Among them were photos relating to the the early Alaska frontier’s city’s celebrations.

One of the photographs taken by Sydney Laurence in 1916 was of a vehicle draped with the American Flag on which Sydney Laurence had written, “Joe Spenard’s First Car in Anchorage.” I mistakenly assumed that the photo documented the first 4th of July Celebration in the newly established town of Anchorage. That honor goes to another Sydney Laurence taken photo from the same year which depicts players on the first 4th of July baseball game as it turns out the flag draped car photo was taken on Labor Day.

Although Anchorage was officially incorporated as a city on November 20, 1920, most would agree that its transformation from a railroad yard tent city construction camp took place on August 14, 1915 when an auction was held for the sale of city lots - another event captured by Sydney Laurence’s camera. That cements the claim to fame that the July 4th 1916 baseball game was Anchorage’s first 4th of July celebratory event! To this day Anchorage includes a 4th of July Baseball Game as an annual event.

It would be three more years though until a full scale 4th of July Celebration to include a parade, drum corps, and marching soldiers from the 24th Infantry would take place on July 4, 1919. Such annual celebrations have continued to this day.

Anchorage's First "Car", Joe Spenard's REO Speedwagon Truck. Joe also acquired a 1915 Model T that he operated as Anchorage's First Taxi:

Joe Spenard would give local children rides in this "first car in Anchorage" as well as volunteer its use for the city's volunteer fire department. Mostly he used it to transport goods from the dock to town for his transport business:

The beach at Lake Spenard which Joe Spenard developed in 1916 in conjunction with a Pavilion and other structures that burned down the following year. The Anchorage Elks Club claims its first picnic held there in 1916 via its predecessor club.

After the fire and braking a leg Joe and his wife Edith concluded their 20 some months living in Anchorage by leaving Alaska for San Francisco and then Sacramento where they owned and operated a hardware store. He died and was buried there in 1934. His wife Edith, who lived until 1956, is also buried there. The Lake, a road, and an entire city all bore his name. The City of Spenard is now an Anchorage suburb that retains the name of Spenard. Spenard Lake is now joined with Lake Hood as the largest float plane base in the world.

Today is already the 4th of July in Japan:

Then in Washington D.C. theCelebratory 4th of July events began early as evident in this photo sent by a friend visiting Washington D.C. this week:
