    if anyone here is bidding on this, the mintmark is not only much sharper than it should be at this grade level, its also in the incorrect place. after finding an 1896-s in the ground ive started a barber collection, so every so often i look for an 01-s to fill the spot (until i find one)

    Obviously, an added mintmark that looks nothing like a genuine coin. Did you alert the seller?

    I agree, S too far to left and should look more like this for the coin's wear elsewhere. I did message the seller, but have not heard back.

    And it goes without saying that you are wasting your time by telling EBay, they just do not care. Out of dozens of obvious counterfeit coins, I think maybe they took down one or two that I reported.

    That’s certainly true - the CDN, other price guides and auction results make such information readily available. So it’s pretty easy to avoid being shocked.

    It could be #Cougar1978 thought why go to the effort on a cull when the same effort could have been applied to a problem-free GD or even a VG with better results.
    Maybe that is what #Cougar1978 was implying.

    i authenticated my 1896-S quarter with mm location, i didnt have much reason to suspect it would be altered or fake as it was dug out of the ground

    no i compared date font and mintmark placement to a few holdered coins. it matched
