eBay Rejected My Reports of Counterfeit Morgans in Counterfeit Holders

P0CKETCHANGEP0CKETCHANGE Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭✭✭

I reported multiple listings yesterday as counterfeit. eBay replied today and rejected the reports, stating "We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made by a customer service agent."

Here are the listing links:

That’s nothing new. The very large majority of my many similar reports over the past couple of years had the same results.

the holders of these show the nfc on the plastic but viewing the reverse a QR code is placed instead of the nfc logo

there is a spoofing website pcgscn.cn that the QR directs

there are also raw counterfeits too

They really need to work on those bar codes on the front though, I mean the holders just look off but those are pitiful. I saw a site out of China with 100 "fake" coin minimums but quantity discounts for over a thousand. None of this stuff is ever going away. Unfortunately, a lot of people will buy them and tuck them away for a later generation.

I feel ya. I am tired of trying to have some obviously fake coins pulled down, only to be told by ebay that it checks out.

I went ahead and reported three of his listings. And to my great surprise, eBay actually removed them.

Despite what people want to keep saying, they do remove listings. But as we've seen, they are unlikely to remove them based on a single report from an unknown entity.

Agree. I'm guessing there some magic number above which they take the report seriously.

It’s a minefield for numismatic brothers and sisters. eBay is not to blame. Their lawyers are.

I doubt that eBay’s lawyers discourage the hiring of people who could weed out many of these counterfeits. Or that the lawyers suggest letting sellers with a history of reported counterfeits and suspended accounts start selling again.

How does "Whatnot" deal with the counterfeit plague?

They likely don't discourage it, but I'd guess they despise it. That cost of hiring a person could cost them a weeks worth of wine.

I doubt that too. But their terms and laws protect them, not its users so much. ( let’s count victims of fraud). Thats more my point.
    +1 here.

I have actually purchased a couple for research; as noted, the reverse QR code scans to a counterfeit CN "PCGS" authentication site.

With both I was able to get a refund through eBay when the return postage sent was counterfeit as well...

Interesting! Just be careful scanning untrusted QR codes. They can send you to any nefarious place on the internet, trigger viruses, etc. Best to use a QR decoder to read the URL instead of opening the link.

Wow that's wild. I have also seen suspicious ebay ads. PCGS Morgans being sold by multiple people with same verification number but different photos in the adds. Some photos it looked like the coin was different too. It made me worry more about ebay sales a little. Especially the low amount of feedback sellers. But that hits close to home because I used to occasionally sell something on ebay vs buying. At least I have perfect buyer feedback I guess.
