Looks VF / XF to me or little lower. Seems rather heavily tarnished possibly cleaned. What is CPG for avg of VF/XF. Then how much sb subtracted if not straight grade? I just don’t see it as XF. Would likely say VF Details. So CPG for VF less the details hit.
Best bet get graded by our hosts, mystery over. Then - Perhaps a problem coin dealer can give you a valuation number. CPG for VF less 25pct?
I lot viewed this coin at the FUN show to get an idea of the surfaces and the toning. I originally thought the icy blue colored tone on the obverse was pcgs’ issue and could kill any chance of straight grade or any sense of normalcy with the coin due to risk of questionable color. In actuality, the coin is not as bright as the photos show, and I have no issues regarding the toning. It looks like nice album tone.
The problem is the massive amount of hairlines (especially on the obverse) which are not visible in the photos. This coin was cleaned, and unfortunately will not straight grade.

Oh, sorry I didn’t answer that part of the mystery. I think it’s a 35.
The market, in mid July, said the OP PCGS VF details 1916-D dime was worth $3,660.
In the same auction that result was just over an ANACS F-12 at $3,416 and less than two PCGS Fines, one an F-12 CAC at $4,636 and a F-15 at $4,270. Some of the next closest higher grades in the sale were an NGC VF-35 at $6,710 and a PCGS AU Details Cleaned at $6,405.

That's what I think. VF 35 Harshly cleaned. No 40 for this one far as I would be concerned.

Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.
