Finally finished my Morgan Box of 20

This was an impulse and unplanned purchase. Was looking for a semi key to fill the last spot. Saw this better date, near gem, in a dealer’s showcase. Got it for graysheet bid. Was very pleased.

I guess it’s time to start box two! 😉

I like the 87-O's as an undervalued Date/Mint

Agreed. I used to think that was a common date, until I started pricing them. About four times more expensive than the 84-O, 85-O, 88-O and the 99-O.

    Here’s a list of them:

They are all PCGS. Morgans are easy enough to find that I can be snobby about the slabs. lol

    Common dates (all MS 64):

    1886 OGH
    1887 OBH
    1888 (Sight white sticker)
    1898-O OGH
    1899-O OGH
    1904-O OGH

    Better Dates:

    1878 7/8 Strong MS 64 CAC
    1878-CC MS 64
    1883-CC MS 64 OGH
    1884-CC MS 64 OGH
    1885-CC MS 64
    1885-S MS 63 OGH CAC
    1886-S MS 63
    1887-O MS 64
    1887-S MS 63 OGH
    1888-S MS 64 OBH
    1897-S MS 63 OGH
    1899 MS 64 CAC
    1900-S MS 64
    1902-S MS 63 Rattler CAC

I’ll see what I can do about getting a group photo.

Box of 20 for Morgans is good collecting concept for the series.

I know I’ll never complete the set…At least not in Mint State. But, my goal is about 75% completion. I’d be real happy with that. 😊

    Congrats!

Looking forward to see you start your second box!

I finished my first a while ago and started a second. I only have 8 Morgans (plus 2 Peace) in my second box. Hoping to finish it sometime but my wallet is gonna hurt as I run out of common dates 😅

Thanks! Congratulations to you, too! I’ve always been an advocate of buying the keys first, but I can’t resist a common date, especially, if it’s in an old holder and nice for the grade.

How do you define the box of 20 set? Interesting concept.

For most people it’s a way to keep on improving the quality of your collection while having more of a concentrated focus. You’re supposed to upgrade your box once you finish it and not go beyond 20 pieces. But for me, I use it as a milestone or steppingstone. It’s a goal, but once I reach it, I keep going, which kind of goes against the logic or strategy of the concept. I did the same thing with my Walkers. Reaching a full box of 20 Coins is certainly a good achievement. So, In the beginning, I use it as a motivator.

That’s the best part of it - you don’t.

Don't knock yourself, keep the fire burning.

I recently (last August) achieved a goal I had set out for a while ago for my complete 97 coin PCGS graded Morgan Set which was having a "Weighted GPA" of 60.00 or better.

I may try it for ancients. Otherwise I’ll stick with my box of 1,000 or wherever I end up as I learn more.
