Even in 2017, the nickel cost more than 11c to produce, not including the cost of shlepping this worthless token around to make change. .
You mean the worthless dollar. Like silver and gold did the nickel is rising in material value.
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
It was once said that a few trillion here and a few trillion there and it starts adding up to real money.
The dollar ain't what it used to be.
If we eliminate the nickel we must get rid of the dime or the quarter. We would be wasting the billions of dollars it required to make them and this is one of the chief reasons the dollar has been so trashed.

my local Ace hardware sells nothing for less than 24c, oddly enough.
Your local Ace must be in a really bad economic area. My local Ace sells many bits and pieces for under a quarter, I bought some just yesterday. Oddly enough, I think you were trying to send another message which failed.

I was going to, I’m no fan of dimes, either.
BUT, we could just go decimel and round to the nearest 10c, thereby keeping the dime viable.
I'd rather round everything to quarters. Dimes would be ambiguous if a price ends in 5, but 25 is odd so you wouldn't have that problem

+1 for quarters. Without changing the current denominations or specs, I think most people would rather carry only quarters rather than dimes and halves (and halves are not as commonly accepted in vending machines or parking meters).
I want to be able to pay for a dinner for two with my pocket change. Bills should be pulled out for fancy dinners, rent payment, and groceries for a month.
Why not? Loosing a coin used to be a big deal. Today, some people just throw away their change. It’s useless. Even the quarter.

But you’re still making a coin that literally buys NOTHING.
30+ years coin shop experience (ret.) Coins, bullion, currency, scrap & interesting folks. Loved every minute!
A nickel is enough to pay all of many people's bills for about two minutes.
It isn't much but it's worth a lot more than it costs to count them.
Lots and lots of bolts, nuts, and small parts cost less than 5c. For lack of a nail...

We are all getting scammed now.

The nickel should have been canceled in 1873.

Stay ahead of destroying the dollar errrr... inflation, and just rise everything to a dollar now.
