I have to play a WC game today because of an offered 50% profit boost. Problem is the bet must be at least -200 odds. Every favorite is lower odds.

Looking at Algeria ML +650 or maybe the +350 draw.

Trying to handicap how Algeria will play based on the article that Darin posted. Will that "hospitality" improve or weaken their performance?

Yes I'm a sick handicapper, looking for every conceivable angle possible to give me an edge. I admit it. 😂

As mentioned, received a profit boost on the US Open. I see Scottie is the favorite at +550 to win the first round.

Considering that Scottie has gotten off to a terribly slow start in almost every recent game he has played, could this perhaps be one of the worst sucker bets in history at those odds? Or will he have a sudden form reversal?

    We shall see.

i don't know much a Brazil/Spain p-lay pays, but i'd be gobsmacked if there was any other outcome than both of them winning their next game

Without Yamal creating space Spain seemed unable to press. That's why I like France if Yamal is off the field at all in the WC. They don't need possession to dominate games... while Spain is the king of hollow possessions - English soccer without playmaking. Width is as good as depth in soccer and without Yamal, and Nico, starting Spain had no width on the wings which collapsed their midfield and that's why the game was spain with 70+ possession going side to side for 5 minutes at a time. horrible game to watch. Then Yamal comes on and they're electric. I would have still bet Spain over Cape Verde 10 times out of 10, but I can see the logic behind a negative bet on Spain there... even if $400K is quite a reach. Without Yamal Spain is still a top 5 team so it was a bad showing.

That's great information. Thanks. I'd have to believe based on that, Scottie will have his motivation/adrenaline at a high level right from the opening tee.

I don't have the stones to play him to win the tourney. My style is more grinding rather than high odds, it seems to work better for my personality. However I'm not that cautious to only play him at T20 and get very little profit. I think my only decision left is whether to play Scottie T5 or T10.

    stevekstevek Posts: 32,307 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Scottie -113 for T20

Those odds were much better than expected. I hope at the end of the tourney I'm hissed for Scottie placing higher and leaving money on the table. 😂

Dam, I just noticed I accidentally placed the bet for Round 1 only. No wonder the odds were so good. Won't let me cash-out so I'm stuck with it. Oh well, if I screwed up, then I screwed up. 🤷‍♂️

France vs Senegal - over 2.5

Don't even like this wager, but with a fat 50% profit boost, was forced to play something.

    I'm hoping for a score-fest. 😐

The favorite to win the cup, versus Senegal with a population of maybe less than 100 people, and France doesn't even have a single stinking shot on goal in the entire first half? Are you kidding me?

Not kidding - if this doesn't improve markedly in the second half, even under threat of death, I will never again bet another stinking soccer game. 😒

Cash-out value is $3.78 on my 10 spot. If I had any brains I would take it, but if I had any brains I wouldn't have bet soccer in the first place.

I'll let it ride so I can get hissed off some more. 😐

France finally got off their chicken-chit arzes and scored a goal.

$3.59 cash-out value. I should probably gobble it up and be happy I didn't lose it all. 🤔

Okay who's screwing around with me, hacked my computer, and it's showing in the last ten minutes of the game, the score went from 1-0 and is now 3-1, and I win the bet?

That was a very cruel thing to do - tease me like that

Funny thing is, it's around 4:45 and I had to get some work in by around 5:00. So I switch off the ESPN screen, figuring it's hopeless anyway. Got the work done, and sometime after 5:00 I log back into ESPN to get the bad news. And the score was 2-1. I was shocked. Then about a millisecond later, it went to 3-1.

I never wish any ill will towards a fellow sports bettor, never have, never will. But I would have sure hated to be heavily invested in that game with the under, with like less than ten minutes left, figuring Senegal certainly isn't gonna score, and France is just going to play some D and run out the clock. I'm not sure who scored the second goal. If it was Senegal, it sure had to motivate France to step it up. I'll certainly enjoy watching the replay later on Youtube.

I'd have to believe there may be some news stories about small fortunes won and lost on that game in the last ten minutes.

BTW - you made the smart bet here. I wanted badly to play France to win for a few good reasons. But with the -215 I couldn't use the 50% boost. So I had to do the O/U thing to use the boost. Which was one reason I was getting miffed, thinking to use that profit boost, it cost me money by not making the smarter bet to just play France straight up. I've done that a few times before, but I strongly believe ya just gotta use them boosts. Especially a fat 50%. Overall doing that has worked out well in the long run, as it fortunately did today.

Warning! Warning! Will Robinson. I bet $5 on Scottie to win 3 weeks ago for this event. So you know where this will go. Sorry Scottie maybe next year for the Slam.
Will be chasing some other plays in the US Open.

thanks my man, we both know what type of player he is, but when i caught wind of his track record at the US Open, i was sucked from the sideline.

he has played in the US Open nine times in his career, and not once has he ever finished outside the top 20. that gives me mixed emotions. it scares the bejeebers out of me because you know as well as i that all streaks come to an end. it's golf, after all. but that type of stupendous consistency is hard for me to ignore......thus i had to jump on him

I'm not following every game, but from what I've seen, the favorites have done well. Except of course for that game with Spain.

Portugal being the fourth favorite right now, I think says your buddy has at least a decent chance of a nice score.

    couple of factoids:

the US men have played in 12 World Cups. best showing: 1930 when they reached the semis. aside from 1930, they've advanced past the round of 16 one time.

only 8 countries have ever won the World Cup: Brazil (5), Germany (4), Italy (4), Argentina (3), France (2), Uruguay (2), England (1), Spain (1)

Very interesting info. I would have never guessed that. With Brazil that must have been during the Pele years, perhaps the most famous soccer player of all time.

I can better see now why there was so much excitement when the USA women won it some years back. Considering the men have never won it as you stated, and maybe that was the first time USA women had won it - the one with the purple hair - LOL.

One reason I posted those odds, just a minor reason. I can't recall who wrote the article or which website it was published. But the headline on the article made it sound like the USA men were practically a lock to win the World Cup. Not having any interest in it, and not knowing World Cup history, I just glanced at the headline and figured, well maybe it's similar to men's Olympic basketball as far as winning is concerned.

Obviously that article headline was nothing more than shameful click bait. Not that click bait articles are anything new in this day and age.

1930 I think was also Paraguay's best showing ever. Ironically perhaps. Transposing... Extrapolating.... USA Wins.

I won $358 at the tables yesterday. Looked at some bets at the kiosk but not much interests me. Not betting on baseball games because any lousy team can beat a great team on any given day, don’t know anything about soccer, too many great players in men’s golf and you never know which ones will play great or poorly on any given weekend. Royals odds to win AL central now at +3000 😂. They will just keep losing no indication of a turnaround. The only thing I like is Korda next weekend in their third major of the year.

    From Google:
1954: Won as West Germany by defeating Hungary 3-2 in the final.

Quite amazing that West Germany, half the country at the time, won it only nine years after losing a devastating war.

I thought I just entered the twilight zone. Watching an episode of Adam 12 and it suddenly merged into an episode of Emergency. Mind blown. Our hero’s took a sick kid to the hospital where the cast of emergency was waiting. 😱
It was like Marshall Dillon showing up at the Cartwright ranch and arresting Little Joe for 17 counts of murder for all his fiancés that died.
Odds on all 17 of those being natural causes 1 in 100 trillion….. to keep it on topic.

How about Batman every week, successfully getting out of every life threatening jam?

Batman should have been a sports bettor. With his amazing luck, wouldn't matter if his team was down by 50 points with a minute left to play, he'd still win. 😂
