SHARE WATCHING THE 300 MILLION DOLLAR “BOXCAR” THAT FLEW FROM ANCHORAGE TODAY

One of my childhood memories was seeing a “Flying Boxcar” in the air over Elko Nevada, a plane that began its service life the same year I began mine. The C-119, which actually looked like a flying box in the sky with its dual tail wings helping to form the shape of a box, remained in service with the US Air Force from 1948 to 1995. In 1995 a new plane replaced it, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III which continues in military use to this day. It too has a unique shape with a T-Tail configuration.

Both planes share the ability to transport troops and equipment to remote locations with short (3,500 feet) and unimproved runways. The C-119 was instrumental in helping to build Alaska’s “Dew Line” during the Cold War era. That followed its extensive use in the Korean War where it flew missions based out of Japan. Its replacement, the C-17, was larger and more costly coming in at a price tag of 300 million dollars for a single plane that could transport 100 paratroopers, double the number of the C-119. Its larger size could transport tanks and helicopters as well.

It was today’s version of the Flying Boxcar that I was able to capture on video today. In the video the C-17 is seen ascending upward and northward into the Alaska sky after having departed from Anchorage’s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). In the video it is seen flying toward and above magnificent billowing white clouds that are impressive in their own right.

Here are some interesting facts about the C-17 and its deployment here in Alaska. There are 275 operating globally and 223 of those are flying for the United States either with the US Air Force, the Air National Guard or the Reserves.

Eight of those are assigned to Alaska and fly out of JBER. Interestingly eight is also the number of C-17s being flown respectively by the air forces of four other countries, the United Kingdom, Australia, UAE, and Qatar. The only country having more is India with 11.

Alaska’s first C-17 was delivered 19 years ago this week on June 11th of 2007. It was christened as “Spirit of Denali” and its number is 00-017, presumably indicating the 17th built.

The World knows the C-17 as the plane that evacuated 823 people in a single flight from Kabul Afghanistan. (The plane is designed to carry 134 troops.) Close to 80,000 of the approximately 124,000 evacuated were on C-17s.

Ascending upward and northward from Anchorage Alaska’s Joint Base Richardson-Elmendorf (JBER), this mammoth-sized Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is captured in this below linked video flying into and above the billowing clouds - spectacular in their own right.

SAKURA CONTINUE TO BLOOM IN ALASKA

Cherry Blossoms’ June Blooming in Alaska Welcomed by Birds and Bees Seen In Flight Among the Cherry Tree Blossoms

Identified as “Winter-flowering Cherry,” the Cherry Blossoms captured in this video are seen in Full Bloom on this mid-June day here in Anchorage Alaska.

The subject species of Cherry Blossom tree is “ prunus subhirtella” with clusters of soft pink pedals. A cold-hardy variety, they are also commonly known as “Spring Cherry” or “Rose Bud Cherry.”
