Sources for Large U.S. Coin Photo Archives?

Does anyone know of any large collections of U.S. coin images that are in the public domain or available under a permissive license?
I'm looking for a substantial number of images of U.S. coins for a research project.
I've been directed toward museum collections, the U.S. Mint, and academic archives, but so far I haven't found anything on the order of 1,000+ images. Many of the collections I do find consist primarily of unique or rare specimens, whereas I'm interested in more common circulation coins.
I've also looked at auction archives, which contain large numbers of images, but they don't appear to be intended for research or dataset use.
If you've come across archives, research collections, educational resources, or organizations that maintain large image libraries, I'd appreciate any leads.
