How do I get circulated rolls from the bank?

acelmacelm Posts: 59 ✭✭✭

So I got $120 in dimes from the bank and they were all uncirculated 2025-D rolls, apart from three. This isn't new: ever since about 2021 every visit to the bank has ended in the disappointment of a brand-new box. I hadn't hunted dimes (or any coin rolls) in forever and thought this only applied to pennies (which I probably can't get anymore anyway) and nickels. I apparently stand corrected.

Have any CRH folks noticed the same thing happen to them, and if so, are there any tips you recommend to at least get circulated coins more often than not? Or is the age of hunting change gone forever?

I ask for customer rolls. When I got the BU boxes, I sold them unsealed.

I usually have had the opposite problem, looking for new uncirculated rolls and only getting circulated, especially with quarters and halves.

As far as banks are concerned, a dime is a dime. I don't think the age of hunting change is gone, but I'd guess many banks don't consider it their mission to search out (at their expense) coins for collectors to sort through.

I feel like something changed after the COVID "coin shortage" though. I remember when almost every set of rolls I picked up was circulated. Now the banks are either reluctant or just pull out coins they received straight from the Mint.

That said I'm not as concerned with CRH as I used to be. More interested in proof quarters and commemoratives—I'm not gonna find those in pocket change any time soon!

ask who they get coins from (eg brinks) then find a bank that doesn't use the same service

Forget the boxes. Stop at "EVERY" bank you see. Account or no account. Go with cash in your pocket. Ask the tellers for the coins you want in customer wrapped rolls not machine wrapped rolls. Some banks will require that you have an account......many will not. You have nothing to lose...just go ask. You might be surprised how many customer wrapped rolls you find.
