What year did you start collecting/stacking coins?

    1. I was in first grade, and my parents took me to a hobby shop. The owner suggested that coins might be a good thing to collect, as the San Francisco Mint was closing and coins minted there could become scarce. I filled Dansco and Whitman folders for cents, nickels, and quarters from pocket change. I lost interest for a couple years in the early '60's, then got back into it with Franklin halves when the 1964 Kennedys came out. Two coin shops opened close to home in 1965, and a third one in 1967. By then, I was earning some money with a part-time job, and after paying tuition most extra money was spent on coins. I learned a lot by reading and listening to stories from old-timers. In the late 1970's and early 1980's I worked in a Denver area coin shop and saw many incredible coins pass through the shop. I'm still active but realize I should be thinking about how to liquidate instead of making new acquisitions. It's hard to shake the collecting bug!
Countdown to completion of my Mercury Set: 1 coin. My growing Lincoln Set: Finally completed!

I stated in 1971 when I earned the Boy Scout Coin Collecting Merit Badge. My father collected stamps but gave me an old Danco Lincoln Cent Folder ( 1909-43 ) that was about 76% complete. I also got some coins from my grandparents. I had an aunt who lived close by who collected and we would trade coins. I've been hooked ever since.

Started a "kid collection" in 1967-8 pulling Lincoln Cents from rolls with my allowance money, then subsequently lawn-mower money. I got serious when my mom moved from our childhood home around 2000 and sent me the remnants of my childhood collection. I got real serious about completing collections in 2021...

I started collecting in 1999 while in Elementary school. Was fascinated with the state quarter program. Completed that set and branched out to vintage coinage.

    1. I found a 64 Rosie in my change that looked different. As a natural information sponge, researching it opened up a vast new world for me. I was always at smoke shops asking for their half dollars or other strange coins. I found a lot of silver coins that way. Sixteen years later, my involvement in the hobby is a lot different now but I have still so much to learn and I still always check my change for silver. ;)

Early to mid 1980s my dad would take me to the coin shop down in Sarasota Florida, off and on through the 90s and early 2000s.

2007, I bought some slabbed gold and became friends with Ronnie Willinger, I’ve been serious in the hobby ever since!

2009 I got into the business and I’ve worked in coins full-time ever since, but my current “collection“ is from 2012 to now, I’ve had several coin collection purges since, but I’m pretty good about keeping the better quality material…

I’ve learned some stuff is very hard to replace!

Joining this forum in late 2007 has been one of the best things that I have ever done! I owe a lot of my knowledge and experience to this community!
