A few months ago, Mint Error News featured this unique 1966 transitional silver Quarter. It is in a SB Auction now and bidding is already at $24,400.

I wonder if the silver planchet may be a planchet for a world coin struck at the Philadelphia mint... I think this would be a long shot but possible. I suspect the weight was likely undertaken and it checked out prior to grading.

They were still striking 1964 dated quarters as late as about August, 1966. There is a significant number of 1965 dated 90% silver quarters.
Curiously there is a single 1964 dated clad quarter.
There are also several 1965 silver dimes.
It may have been stuck somewhere in the coin press itself and then was found and tossed in with the planchets to be struck.
Coin mintages during that period were very high and the mint floor is really just a factory operation.
Very interesting stuff. I did not know that 64 quarters were still being produced into 66.

A few months back at the Portland ANA show, I spoke with the dealer who helped get this coin authenticated. He told me to keep an eye out for it in the stacks auction. The details are a little fuzzy but from what I recall, the woman who had saved it all these years said it was her father's (he knew that it appeared silver and it shouldn't be, so he kept it) He has passed on, and since then the coin literally has spent a couple decades in this lady's drawer. She had called other shops over the years apparently and got the same answer. "They stopped making silver quarters in 1964, you must be mistaken."
She is not a collector, neither was her father. The dealer sent the coin to Anacs prior to PCGS and they sent it back as unable to verify... somthing like that?
That was a head scratcher to myself and the dealer telling me the story. What's so hard about it? It's 90% silver and deated 1966.
It's VERY likely this is the only one of this date that will ever be found.
@Meltdown The Stack's description tells a different story: "Then in 2025, while searching through quantities of 90% silver Washington quarters looking for scarce hub types of the 1964-dated issues, our consignor made the startling discovery of the coin being offered here."

Hmmm, I had a '65 quarter not too long ago that didnt look like it had the "clad" copper on the rim. But I didnt think it could be silver. Now I dont know what I did with it. hah

I would have much more interest in the 90% silver 1970 D dime if NCG deemed it to have Full Bands on the torch. Without the FB designation this coin is not of sufficient quality to meet my exacting collecting standards.
A long time ago at a Baltimore show, I saw a 1965 silver dime AND a 1966 silver dime in the same case. Alas, at that time I didn't have enough money for either one.

It was probably plated. There is no possibility a silver quarter could circulate since 1965.
Years ago I found in circulation a lead quarter dated 1967. Wonder if there are any more of those around.
Supposedly SB will be auctioning a 1970-D Roosevelt Dime struck on a 90% silver planchet this summer. The coin is certified by NGC.

Looks like the coin went for a song.
A lot of people collect silver quarters and now the series goes continuously from 1932 to 1966 except for the 1933.
Was reading a little bit about that coin today. Apparently it was found in the aftermath of a house fire(!) and it graded AU50.
