    Tuesday June 2 - Ohio

An all Ohioan crew launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-70 on July 13, 1995.
(Robert Duval reprised John Glenn’s role as a geriatric astronaut in the film Deep Impact three years later).

Ohio is the second state quarter to display the Wright Flyer. NC usurped Ohio’s right to the origin of the flying machine. North Carolina contributed the wind, The monument at Kitty Hawk is appropriate to the event, but (as a Tarheel) I think NC wants to claim the Wrights too.

Ohio carried weight in the development of the STS, but used the image of an astronaut instead an image of the shuttle, not stepping on Floridas’s choice of design. The Flyer juxtaposed with the Shuttle would have been a cooler design.

Grant - Because the "Star" variety commands a massive premium, it is one of the most counterfeited coins of its era. Unscrupulous sellers have historically altered standard "No Star" coins by adding a star to deceive buyers.

Cincinnati - The coin was proposed by local promoter Thomas Melish to commemorate 50 years of Cincinnati as a "center of music". However, the Cincinnati Music Society was essentially a conjured-up organization invented by Melish to get the coins authorized by Congress. It was a fictitious society, lol. Separately, the coin’s obverse features American composer Stephen Foster. But Foster had no real role in Cincinnati's musical movement at all - he only lived there briefly as a bookkeeper and famously never wrote any of his songs in the city.

Cleveland - The obverse depicts General Moses Cleaveland, the surveyor who founded the city in 1796. Notice the missing “a” in Cleveland on the reverse? He spelled his name with an extra "a”, as shown on the obverse, which was dropped by mapmakers shortly after the city's founding.

I got a ms 64 grant as well, no star but just the same

This memorial site in Ohio was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Britain, Canada and the U.S. The memorial, a Doric column rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, is situated five miles from the longest undefended border in the world. The memorial bears the name of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry. Six naval officers (three American and three British) slain during the battle are buried under its rotunda. It was first established as a national site on March 3, 1919 (40 Stat. 1322).

    Characteristics
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932. It has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original.

The reverse (tails) depicts the statue of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry with the Peace Memorial located in the distance. The memorial is one of the tallest of its kind in the U.S. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial.

Ohio joined the Union on March 1, 1803, becoming the 17th state. The Buckeye State quarter's reverse design honors the state's contribution to the history of aviation, depicting an early aircraft and an astronaut, superimposed as a group on the outline of the state. The design also includes the inscription "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers." The claim of this inscription is well justified — the history–making astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn were both born in Ohio, as was Orville Wright, one of the inventors of the airplane. Ohio was also the site of the development and testing of the Wright brothers' 1905 Flyer.

    Characteristics
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.

The reverse (tails) design features features an early aircraft and an astronaut superimposed as a group on the outline of the state, and stars.

The Wright brothers, Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful airplane.

Wilbur and Orville Wright were two of seven children born to Milton Wright, a clergyman, and Susan Catherine Koerner.

Wilbur was born near Millville, Indiana, in 1867; Orville in Dayton, Ohio, in 1871.

The brothers gained the mechanical skills essential to their success by working for years in their Dayton, Ohio-based shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles, in particular, influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle such as a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice.

A Medal of Congress was presented to the Wright Brothers on March 4, 1909 for "recognition and appreciation of the great service Orville and Wilbur Wright of Ohio rendered the science of aerial navigation, in the invention of the Wright aeroplane, and for their ability, courage and success in navigating the air."

This medal was issued by the Treasury Department to honor and commemorate the flight of Wright Brothers. The mint issued a special gold addition to the Wright Brothers and made bronze copies available to the public.

The Wright Brothers Medal was conceived of in 1924 by the Dayton Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the SAE established it in 1927 to recognize individuals who have made notable contributions in the engineering, design, development, or operation of air and space vehicles. The award is based on contributed research papers.

The award honors Wilbur and Orville Wright as the first successful builders of heavier-than-air craft, and includes an image of the Wright Flyer, the plane which they flew in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

    Cajun innovation dollar—

Andrew Jackson Higgins was not a Cajun by birth. He built shallow draft boats in New Orleans.

General Dwight Eisenhower is quoted as saying, "Andrew Higgins ... is the man who won the war for us. ... If Higgins had not designed and built those LCVPs, we never could have landed over an open beach. The whole strategy of the war would have been different." Adolf Hitler recognized Higgins war efforts in ship production and bitterly dubbed him the "New Noah".

Louisiana joined the Union on April 30, 1812, becoming the 18th state. The Louisiana quarter design incorporates the image of a brown pelican, a trumpet with musical notes, and the outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory, with the inscription "Louisiana Purchase." Louisiana's nickname, the "Pelican State," honors the state bird — the brown pelican — which is indigenous to Louisiana. The trumpet and musical notes represent the birth of jazz in New Orleans. The coin's third element, the outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory, refers to the largest single expansion of the United States, which roughly doubled the size of the country in 1803.

    Characteristics
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.

The reverse (tails) design features an image of the pelican - Louisiana's state bird - a trumpet with musical notes, and the outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory.

A brass medallion struck to commemorate Baring Brothers "Return to 8 Bishopsgate, 12th October 1981", 80mm diameter, three Elizabeth II 1953 sets of coinage (Half Crown to Farthing) and a selection of mixed English and Foreign coins

Barings Bank was a British merchant bank based in London. It was one of England's oldest merchant banks after Berenberg Bank, Barings' close collaborator and German representative. It was founded in 1762 by Francis Baring, a British-born member of the German–British Baring family of merchants and bankers.

In 1802, Barings and Hope & Co. were called on to facilitate the largest land purchase in history: the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. It is regarded as "one of the most historically significant trades of all time".

The New Orleans Mint (French: Monnaie de La Nouvelle-Orléans) operated in New Orleans, Louisiana, as a branch mint of the United States Mint from 1838 to 1861 and from 1879 to 1909. During its years of operation, it produced over 427 million gold and silver coins of nearly every American denomination, with a total face value of over US$307 million. It was closed during most of the American Civil War and Reconstruction.

After it was decommissioned as a mint, the building has served a variety of purposes, including as an assay office, a United States Coast Guard storage facility, and a fallout shelter. Since 1981 it has served as a branch of the Louisiana State Museum. Damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, after over two years of repairs and renovations, the museum reopened in October 2007. The New Orleans Mint has been designated a National Historic Landmark, and it is the oldest extant structure to have served as a U.S. Mint.

Nathan C. Folger was born in Hudson New York in 1810. On New Year’s day 1830 Folger arrived in the city of New Orleans. Immediately upon his arrival he engaged in the retail clothing business. Sometime thereafter, he opened his own clothing store at 33 Old Levee. This is evident by his first store card emission, Rulau HT-177 dated 1837, pictured below.

Sometime in that same year, Folger’s business failed. From that time in 1837 through 1842, he relocated back to New York City. It is unknown what profession he pursued during his time back in New York, nor exactly when he came back to New Orleans.

However, in 1849 Folger formed a partnership with Thomas N. Blake, a previous competitor in New Orleans. After a few years Blake disappeared from the venture’s name, and Folger evidently became the firm’s sole proprietor.

Folger’s son, Charles W. joined the firm in 1855. About three years thereafter, Folger’s two other sons, Fred G. and Nathan C. Jr., also joined the firm.

Folger’s clothing business remained in operation until 1862. Most probably due to the Civil War the firm closed. Nathan C. Folger didn’t appear again in New Orleans directories until 1867, when he was listed as a soap manufacturer operating under the partnership of Hughes & Folger Co.

The Civil War Campaign Medal is considered the first campaign service medal of the United States Armed Forces. The decoration was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who had served in the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865.

The medal was first authorized in 1905 for the fortieth anniversary of the Civil War's conclusion. The blue and gray ribbon denotes the respective uniform colors of the U.S. and Confederate troops. The Army Civil War Campaign Medal was established by the United States War Department on January 21, 1907, by General Orders Number 12. To qualify, a soldier had to serve between April 15, 1861, and April 9, 1865. The closing date was extended to August 20, 1866, date of President Johnson's Proclamation ending the war. The 2017 George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Quarter is the 40th coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

George Rogers Clark National Historical Park was named a National Park in 1966. The park is located within the city limits of Vincennes, Indiana adjacent to the Wabash River. The 26.17-acre site contains the George Rogers Clark Memorial which commemorates the achievements of Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark and his frontiersmen during the American Revolution.

Following Clark’s capture of British posts at Kaskaskia and Cahokia (in the Illinois country along the Mississippi River) in 1778, he led his small contingent of men in a daunting mid-winter march of 157 miles that culminated in the surrender of the British garrison at Fort Sackville on February 25th, 1779. Clark’s daring surprise capture of the fort is considered one of the greatest feats of the American Revolution. The event effectively limited British control of the region and was instrumental in the subsequent establishment of the Northwest Territory and American expansion west of the Appalachians.

The memorial was designed and constructed between 1927 and 1936. It is the largest memorial outside of Washington D.C. and the largest placed on a battlefield within the US. The rotunda boasts seven large murals and a bronze statue of Clark.

    Characteristics
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932. It has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original.

The reverse (tails) depicts George Rogers Clark leading his men through the flooded plains approaching Fort Sackville. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of George Rogers Clark National Historical Park.
