The Belmont Stakes

Post positions to be drawn Monday. Looks like a field of 9 to the post. Still not a true Belmont as it's run at 1 1/4 mile instead of the traditional 1 1/2. So it's the Derby distance.

    The Kentucky Derby
    The Preakness
    The Belmont Stakes

What else is coming down the pike?

Why is the Derby more popular than these other races??

Interesting question. Could be because Kentucky is so famous for race horses. In Kentucky, breeding horses is a huge industry whereby it's just a sideline in other states.

Plus the Kentucky Derby is a gala event. Women wear fancy outfits, hats, etc. Versus the other two which are sort of just another big horse race.

Probably some historical reasons as well.

Me thinks has something to do with the fashion statements the ladies like to make. Clothes, especially the hats. Even us guys get into it now with the flamboyant suits, gear etc. Celebs even invade Churchill on that day a place to be seen. A social scene if you will.
But the real draw is it's the first big race exposure for the promoted crop of 3 year old horses. All fans looking to see who will be the "now" horse going forward. And of course it's Kentucky. Home of the throughbred and all it's breeding history and farms. Tradition .

After the Belmont all eyes turn to Saratoga, site of the Travers for 3 year olds. Labeled the mid-summer derby.

Post draw was today. Renegade made favorite 2nd in Derby behind Golden Tempo. Derby winner Golden Tempo 3rd choice in odds.

$1 win bets #4,6,8,9. $1 ex 9/68 and 68/9. Betting the home town trainers, Devaux and Brown. All on a hunch.
BTW at Saratoga Saturday General Admission is $75.00. Insane.

$75? I could possibly see that for the clubhouse, but for general admission?

I guess Saratoga wants to keep the riffraff out. May as well put up a sign saying, no $2 bettors allowed in.
