Finally finished my Standing Quarter One per Date Set

Well now, after many years of searching, many missed opportunities and being the under bidder in more than a few different auctions, I finally secured a really nice 1930 S SLQ PCGS Gem 65 CAC.

These coins have been hot, lately, and I got this one from a dealer’s inventory for an extremely reasonable amount considering what the last one sold for, at auction, and this one is a much nicer coin, IMHO. Just happened to be at the right place at the right time. I can’t stress enough, the importance of diligence and vigilance. Very happy this night! Celebrating with a West Coast IPA or two!

This was the last coin that I needed for my SLQ One Per Date set, too! Stickered material is currently very hot and the ‘30 S is a lot more difficult and in demand than most people realize. This one is not designated full head, but it is very close. The hair, face and three leaves on the head-gear are very prominent. Just a little flatness along the ear-hole area.

In lieu of the 1916; I have a 1917 D type one in the first slot and in the second slot; I have a 1917 S type two and both are near gem and full head. The NGC registry allows for this option. When done this way, this is still not an easy set to complete. Took me about eight years. But, I must admit, I was moving at a more casual and leisurely pace and quite discerning and careful in my purchase choices.

Here’s a link to the entire set:

This is the first non-Walker set that I’ve ever completed. This set is 86% PCGS and 43% CAC stickered. It is also 43% full head.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Beautiful examples of a beautiful set! Well done.

But I have a question--Understanding as I do how expensive the 1916 is (especially in the grades you're collecting), I still have trouble understanding how one can consider a SLQ date set to be complete without a 1916. I'm not trying to criticize, but it's a mystery to me. Thanks.

You answered your own question. Since the 1916 is pricey and can be cost prohibitive, it’s just a budget friendly alternative for people. Technically, it’s not complete without the 1916, obviously. I still might pick one up, someday..But until then, I’m satisfied with my progress.

I think it's odd that NGC defines it that way. Why not just call it a Type 2 one-per-year set? (I know it's not really you I'm asking?)

That is a very nice set. It is one of the most beautiful, if not THE most beautiful US coins.

@jmlanzaf Thanks for the passive-aggressive post. The first slot is type one and you can add a 1916 (for those who wish to be technically complete) or a 1917. The second slot is 1917 type two. It’s just a nice option that they give you, so that more can participate. Nothing difficult to understand.

I don't know why you're calling it passive-aggressive. I thought it was a fair question. It's a rather odd (to me) hybrid of a type set and a one-per- year set.

Nice set, though. Or are you going to label that as sarcastic?

Fantastic accomplishment! I love the SLQ series and in the early 1990s had a fair number of them, which over the years were all sold off. However, I still have a small (very small!) handful of nice coins. This is a wonderful set of a beautiful coin.
