Heritage Auctions...Winnings and Record Results...Update Below for Sunday Night Action

mintonlyplsmintonlypls Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have no wins to report in this auction....gave it a good run on the Sunday Night '86 Jordan RC PSA-9...but was the underbidder. My observation of the vintage market is that strong prices continue to occur... and eye appeal matters and was most evident on the sale of 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookies below. After seeing this result...it made me glad that I had acquired a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie SGC-7 from Heritage in January 2025...which then received an MBA-Silver Diamond in October 2025. Here are results of some lots that I was tracking...

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA-8 (MBA-Gold) $464,000...previous record $436,000

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie SGC-5.5 (MBA-Silver) $128,000...auction estimate $40,000

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie PSA-7 $106,700...yes, the SGC-5.5 copy beat the PSA-7 copy by ~$22,000

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie SGC-8 $195,200

1953 Topps Mickey Mantle SGC-7 (MBA-Gold) $40,000...estimate $25,000

1955 Bowman Mickey Mantle PSA-7.5 (MBA-Silver) $14,000...previous record $11,600

1955 Topps Jackie Robinson PSA-9 (MBA-Gold) $525,000!...previous record $232,000

1963 Pete Rose Rookie PSA-8.5 $56,000...previous record $39,000

1964 Pete Rose PSA-9 $82,300...previous record $70,000

1965 Roberto Clemente PSA-9 $35,300...previous record $29,000

1968 Mickey Mantle PSA-9 (MBA-Gold) $20,100...previous record $18,800

1969 Nolan Ryan PSA-9 $16,400...previous record $15,000

1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 Mainstream Rookie (available in retail stores) PSA-10 $341,600...Recent High

1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 Mainstream Rookie (available in retail stores) PSA-9 (MBA-Gold) $67,100...Recent High

1987 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA-10 (MBA-Gold) $76,200...previous record $58,800

1986 Fleer Basketball Set…all 132 cards PSA-10s…$512,000

.........................Sunday Night Update on Lots Tracked.....................

1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 Mainstream Rookie (available in retail stores) PSA-9 (No Diamond) $73,200!!!!
1987 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA-10 (MBA-Silver) $53,680

There is a $22,500 difference in the '87 Fleer Jordan for MBA-Gold vs MBA-Silver

Please, share your winnings and observations, especially the modern card market as I do not follow that market.

1969 Namath with a gold sticker for 12k
Don’t even worry that it’s completely OF.
Can’t believe someon paid 12,000.00 for a 9 like that.

A beautiful 1965 Joe Namath Rookie SGC-8 (MBA-Silver)...sold for $37,800. I bailed at $20,000. The card avoids skewed/tilted white borders...and it is centered where the margin for error is small due to how thin the white borders are! Here is the card...

Should have put the gold sticker on the 65. Probably would have gone for 2x the silver price.
Centering on that 65 is perfect and card is nuts.

Some huge prices for sure. I bailed on the 75 Aaron PSA 9 silver label - went for $3100 and previous high was $1650.

On the Jackie that went for over $500k anyone else notice some print stuff on the right side of the card - left side of his face and chin area.🤔

  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,651 ✭✭✭✭✭

I only saw gold. Sorry I can’t help.

That's stunning. Minor flaws, yeah. Kinda like oh hey Miss Universe, you got a mole on your chin. But, you win. You're Miss Universe.

THAT gets a gold sticker? What a farce.

Agree with you 100%, KC. That should get an aluminum sticker for one grade lower.

Someone paid good money for a gold sticker and they got what they paid for = Yep Grote you are 100% correct!

30+ years ago it was probably the nicest example of that card the graders had seen.

So, what is it today? NM-MT+7.5? MINT 9(PD)? The plot thickens.

I think investors buy the slab, not the card.

Seeing the prices these cards are getting makes me realize how blinded people are by slabs and stickers. And seeing the ccards that are getting these MBA stickers makes me realize that someone over there is probably making a whole other side business for preferential stickers.

Regarding the Robinson card I noticed that white print circle above the S on his last name, that takes a little away as well as far as I'm concerned.

The Namath is gorgeous, bottom left corner gives it the 8?

On the Namath Rookie, the centering and lack of skewness of the white borders are exceptional for the issue…I would have bid more aggressively, if I had not seen another lot in which I have more interest. Someone won a very beautiful card.

Kendallcat- the 75 Aaron that would be card number 1 and not 660 right?

that is because Cronyism is alive and well at MBA. I am sure if a friend/hobby buddy subs a card with mike they get the "wink, wink" gold sticker...

One thing these results continue to show is that the barrier to entry at the high end keeps climbing.

Whether it’s stickers, slabs, registries, or simple scarcity, the dollars being thrown around now can make longtime collectors feel like spectators instead of participants.

At the same time, though, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the hobby without chasing six-figure Mantles or gold-labeled trophies. The trick is probably remembering what lane brought me into collecting in the first place. I tend to buy "stories" I guess?

Closing in on 36 yrs of collecting , I would just say…Wow!

i agree i just look for cards that will grade 7 or 8 and centered for 1975 and back. i do look for mint or better for the rest.

I'm with you Mike, I stick with what I like and can afford, I am the type that enjoys a wide range of cards in lower grade with good eye appeal as opposed to a handful of museum pieces

I look at that Robinson that hammered out 500k or whatever and realize the person that bought that card probably can afford spending that like most of us spend a $20 bill

It's a fun but very interesting hobby with many different lanes

All those may be worth more $$$s but the signed cards will always be cooler to have. Something about them are just more fun.

I'm slowly dipping my toe into those again...

I doesn't have to be though. I've been recently searching for recently graded PSA 6 and received some bargains due to the 'low' grade for cards that look much better.

Similarly, PSA 8s in newer slabs, which present very well for the grade. Always a plus.
