    MDC always has a great (and pricey) selection. So does Palombo and NGSA.

    I think I’m going to start collecting French patterns and essais. More coins. Less competition. And they are beautiful!

    @pruebas

    There are so many patterns and essays that one could develop the framework for typesets for Monarchs and/or various periods in French History. And even that would involve many coins. Most are quite attractive and well made. I have managed to submit a few and am still contemplating others for submission. Lastly, let’s remember the Piedfort Essai issues as the double thickness adds an unusual dimension.

    Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

    Well, there goes that idea. I had a few that I had interest in. The prices were not cheap!
    The essais were crazy high.

    I bought this one, despite it not being PCGS graded like most of the others, because it is so rare and I need it for my Pillet coinage patterns set. (I think it may have graded Details, so they cracked it. But I do not know yet.) Of course, I had to pay retail for it because of all the dealers in the room.

    These Pillet essais are normally struck in nickel. This is a very rare silver strike. Not to mention, this particular design was unknown to me prior to this auction, so I suspect it's one of the tougher ones.

    There was another (unknown to me) Pillet essai that I needed, and it too was rare, but it was unsigned, and it was bronze, so I let it go to save my fire power for this one. As you can see, this one is signed.

    And I bought this one because....just because I liked it. PCGS 65 in nickel.

    For comparison, here are the silver and gold strikes that I already have in my collection. (NGC 62 & 64).
    This design is the "common” one that we often see struck in nickel (Mazard-2149).
    The obverse (the side with the country name, "RF") is different from the new one (which is unlisted in Mazard).

    Notice the similarities to the Pillet pattern design for Mexico (also in my collection)?
