Since rubber bands are not good to bound a couple or a few slabs together, what can be used instead?
I have several slabs that go together as one item. For example: A couple of error coins such as a pre-cud die crack and one with the cud. I've read here in the past that over time rubber bands are not a recommended choice to bind slabs together long term. Has anyone found something safer to use than rubber bands?

I use CACG slab storage boxes. This way slabs are not in direct contact which can cause scratches on them.
Probably masking tape, but need to refresh every 6 months or so, so it doesn't dry out and get hard to take off. Of course coupling them as such precludes storage in a conventional box.
I use kite string. I don't even need to tie it off. I just wrap it around the stack of slabs about a dozen times and then I just cut it from the roll of string. It keeps the slabs together and it's easy to unwrap the slabs for examination and then rewrap them for storage when I'm done

Do you want to do this for your own long term storage and organization or for shipping/selling?
Great idea using kite string. Thank you PerryHall.
You could try something like these or similar, lots of choices.

Don't use duct tape.
Bad idea.
(Seriously, those women scrunches they use to hold their hair work well.)
A small ziplock plastic baggie , for jewelry works good to keep like minded coins together
It's all about what the people want...
I keep my slabs in Lighthouse wooden boxes that include trays holding 8 slabs each. Great for display but space and security must be dealt with. For shipping I wrap groups of slabs in paper and secure with a robber band. Many other suitable boxes are available on eBay.
I've been using clear packing tape. First wrap the tape inside out, with the smooth side inward. Then do a second wrap on top of the first with the sticky side against the sticky side of the first wrap. You get a wide band that is smooth on both sides. It fits snugly but can still slide on and off.
It takes a bit of dexterity to get the two pieces of tape to line up. No harm giving a second try if you miss on the first one.
Saran Wrap (aka plastic food wrap) works.
Love the new boxes from Great collections.

Long term storage.
Why not put a piece of paper over the slab on each end and use rubber bands?
my prefered method

I have a tower of butchers string.
Just staple them together, just when you remove them, don't get staple scratches on the slabs lol

Yes, rubber bands dry out fast and break apart. That Broccoli Wad might be the trick. I would also but the slabs in these bags first.
Ziplocs. Simple and harmless.
Is the issue the composition of the rubber band? If so, then there are sulfur-free rubber bands made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
If the issue is forcibly bringing slab lenses into contact with each other, then use storage bags.

I actually do use those. They're great. Not only do they help to keep slabs from being easily scratched, they keep fingerprints off of the slab. Plus they're inexpensive.
For your example a double slab would be cool.
I wrap em in Taco-Bell napkins mostly. RGDS!
