Quarter Eagle Barn Find

MaineJimMaineJim Posts: 828 ✭✭✭✭✭

We are cleaning out an old house and stumbled on an old small envelope with "Aunty" written on it. Inside was a 1929 Quarter Eagle. It matched the year the former owner graduated from high school who had passed on. The clean-up deal was do it for free and keep anything we came upon of value. A nice looking coin but I don't really know how to grade these things. Any opinions? Photos are simple iPhone out in the truck so I apologize for the un-cropped nature of them.

photograph it with a light of some sort on it. That will give a better idea of its lustre.

how much cleaning did you do?

I'm confused as to if this was found in a barn or a house. the title contradicts the post. Also impossible to assign an accurate grade from provided pictures, need better lighting. Best I can tell and it's a WAG would be mid-AU. RGDS!

On the coin or the house...my brother did most the cleaning of the house and barn, I just carried a couple a few things around. He took the coin home to show his wife. Wondering if is worth submitting for a grade.

seems like gold value only. it's just under 1/8th oz and it has the "Aunty" name. i'd say sell it back to them, but you might not get paid if they demand it back for Aunty's memories

There was a thread just a couple days ago that stated the 1929 QE’s were somewhat rare, or at least hard to find. Like others have said, you need some light in your pics so members can see more detail. In any case, a nice find!

    hmmmmmm

i am corrected. 29 is a better year. sells for more than gold value

It looks like it would make a very nice type coin. Slabbing it would increase its appeal and eliminate the "is it a counterfeit" question.

Way to go, nice find. I would want to get it graded in order to analyze its value as it’s a big ticket coin. it looks real nice.

For valuation I refer to CDN CPG and PCGS coin facts. I also do a certificate lookup to note population.

It is at least MS, unless it was cleaned. So, plan on MS 61+, again, unless its been cleaned.

1929 is not a better year. It’s actually one of the most common and cheapest years. That said, all $2 1/2 Indians in decent condition are worth more than melt. I’d say low ms probably for this one.

Agree that it's a very common date. The 1929 Indian $5 is the rare one since most were melted and only a couple hundred survived.

I took a few photos.Taking photos of gold coins is a challenge...using an iPhone and basic yellow room lights is not optimum. Anyways they don't really capture the coin that well but maybe it will help with opinions.
