After I sold my 50-D Jefferson, I was looking for another to fill its spot in my Type Collection, and this 1954-S kinda grabbed my attention. Do you wish to play Guess The Grade?

    The 54-s is underwhelming in terms of being a quality product to represent the Jefferson series. However, given the look of the fields, I suspect it graded 65. I submitted a 54-s to PCGS years ago and it graded 66.

    Almost looks like a couple of extra steps?

    I wouldn’t describe that as a toner. Looks uniformly nickel-colored to me. I would want a much better strike for a type example but it’s clean so I would guess MS66.

    LDS and a weak strike. I would suppose MS64.

    Most of what I see on the cheek in planchet roughness that was not removed due to the weak strike. I’d call it MS66 shot MS67.

    Looks like some clashing, which makes sense given the late die state. My grade is MS63, commercial/PCGGS market grade is MS66FS.

    Well it was not on accident. :D Yes I'm joking somewhat, however, I've seen some nickels that are graded FS that must have been graded by Stevie Wonder.

    I don't know what caused that spot, but there's no fine detail like that on the opposing part of the obverse, so a die clash can be ruled out.

    This thread prompt me to photograph the last of 4 coins I have found for this date in 36 years with a strong strike/details, high grade. But this example is what I think the upper grades should look like, IMO

    I hope that your coin grades 67. Otherwise I see no reason to slab it given the strike, unless it’s a tough variety.

    No way MS65. Ask yourself this question: "Self, is this coin a gem (MS65)? Gem Jefferson nickel needs some steps. Period.

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.
