I Learned Something Today - Best Way to Handle When Someone Else Tries to Register YOUR Coin!

The other day I received the automated PCGS email that said “Another member is attempting to add the following item to their inventory:…”.

My sense is this was an innocent error, where another collector accidentally made an error in the cert number they provided to register a coin.

Regardless, my first reaction was to confirm that cert number (and coin) were indeed current in my Registry, which they were. I then went to my local bank and verified that actual coin was in my safe deposit box, which it was.

I then sent an email to pcgssetregistry@collectors.com, and let them know that I had physical possession of that actual coin, and PCGS should not remove that coin from my Registry Set! Since I did not receive an acknowledging email from PCGS within “a few seconds”, lol, letting me know all is good, my slight touch of paranoia kicked in, fearing MY coin would be released to someone who did not have my coin!

I then messaged @PCGS_Hy, describing the situation, and asking for his help to protect that coin from leaving my Registry. He promptly replied, with a VERY simple solution:

You can deny the request yourself so that the request is closed. You can do so from the activities page of your account. Once denied, subsequent requests are automatically denied from that user.

I’m sure some/many of you knew this, but I did not, so I thought I’d share it! I then took this so simple action that took much less than a minute, and everything was resolved, with peace of mind restored. So much quicker than my panicked (and time consuming actions) taken before I got that great simple advice!

Must be some people trying to do this as I also received a request to remove a coin over at cac. I took a picture of the coin and sent it saying that I own the coin and here is proof
Never heard back and the coin is still in my registry

I have heard of people testing what appear to be “certificate collections” by doing the release the CERT process. I’m not saying that’s the case here but I know of a specific collection with a specific certificate number that I was interested in finding that a dealer told me he was pretty sure it was just a collection of used up certificates and that they had repeatedly sent such requests for coins they didn’t own and all had been granted

That’s good information. I did not know that. Sometimes it’s innocent, but other times not so much.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Hmmm, several years ago I added many of my PCGS half dimes to the PCGS registry/inventory. But three of them were refused. The system said they were registered to other users, and the onus was on me to show that I have physical possession. I didn't really care that much, since I am more active in the NGC registry, which accepts both (for US coins). I never heard anything more. Maybe I should try again, and follow up if necessary.

Over at NGC, when this happens, a coin will be moved to the new claimant after three days unless the other member says he/she still has the coin or releases it in fewer than three days.

All of a sudden I want to occasionally register coins from your set just to make you have to drive to the bank.
