It could also be damage from being banged against another coin.
Considering that the marks are on the highest part of the coin rather than the lowest parts, one of those possibilities is more likely than the other. But "more likely" is not the same as "definite".
the stars would come off the reverse. you need some precise measuring instrument to compare sizes. it would need to measure fractions of a millimeter. "about" is not going to cut it.
I see what u are taking about. Im thinking im going to have it graded. What's the worst that can happen. They say it's post mint and it cost me a little money.

Have you had coins graded before? If you've never graded anything before, getting a single error coin graded could cost close to $200. That's more than a little money, to most people...
I will go though my jewelry store. He has a membership with pcgs. Even if I did have to pay $200 or so. I order 2 boxes of half each week. 4 boxes of dimes and 2 boxes of quarters each week from my bank. But you are right that is alot of money for some people and its alot of money to me but i enjoy looking through all this and have never found anything worth sending off.Im sure I can find $200 or so.
i imagine on your side you just pay for the coin machine bags, but do you know what the bank has to do behind the scenes to sell them to you? i've often thought of buying coin machine bags to search. the last silver batch i sold was in the $18 or $20 range and unfortunately haven't gone fishing since
Well if it's the bags it's what comes into the bank from the community that they bag up to send back to the Federal Reserve. If it's boxes I just tell them what I want and they order them. 1st Community bank doesn't charge to bring coins in and they run though there machines. Back before they stopped the pennies i was going through $600 in pennies a week just looking for wheat pennys. When I get tired of hauling all the coins then I will order a brick or two of $2 bills. I do take the bank tellers doughnuts 3 or 4 times a year.

FWIW. The one I got graded above cost $35. I opted for economy mint error. This is assuming you have a PCGS membership.

i'd just hunt for silver to sell and re-run the rest back through their coin machine, but was - for some unknown reason - uncertain if they could sell me the bags due to internal bookkeeping. i have never asked. but don't really have the energy just to roll search much anymore. perhaps one more go just to try a counting machine bag. i recently got blanked on a box of hand rolls (re-rolls?) and those will be gone tuesday. before that it was more than 5 years ago. maybe 10. $18-$20 back then. sure seemed smart to dump it at that "high price"

Sorry, I don't think it's a dropped star.
It could be a dropped star.
It could also be damage from being banged against another coin.

2 depressions, 2 stars? unsure. if you're measuring try to also get a distance between stars
Actually possibly. Take a gamble and send it in for grading.

Pmd?
Here is a close-up of one that I got attributed so you can try and compare. You can even see the splits on the ends of the stars.

Looks like impact damaage from another coin to me. Lots of bag marks on this coin.
if it's 2 dropped stars it'd be more than twice as good of a find
