Both of these were called "cleaned". What do you think? "XF details" and "AU details".

    The first coin looks like details, cleaned. And, while the second one also looks cleaned, a straight grade on it wouldn’t surprise me.

    Same here, or at least AU-something. Looks like pull away toning around the date; so yes probably lightly cleaned some time ago, but seems market acceptable.

    Yes both look cleaned, and I doubt that the 84-S would ever straight grade with that spot on the rev rim area at CACG. If submitted enough times or by the right person the 01 could receive a straight grade at PCGS, would be a longshot to ever be straight graded at CACG under the current graders.

    Both dates have a relatively high survival population graded at AU50. And many were enhanced just as these two were... and many managed to get straight graded. Seems there is an effort to close the barn door after the horses have left.

    Both coins would be appreciated and enjoyed more if they were left raw and housed in the Album of your choice.

    I do not see either grading higher than 50. I suspect the 84-s got the EF Details?

    Actually the 84-s had a "hinge" where the dark spot was that broke away.

    84 - S XF details, definitely dipped too bright with some old grime still evident on reverse. The 1901 looks MA and AU 50, the reverses are usually weakly struck. Although also probably dipped, it looks acceptable as it retoned nicely.

    While I think the 1901 is nicer than the 1884-S, I think they are both market acceptable enough that they ought to straight grade. However, if I wanted coins like these in straight grade holders, CACG would not be my first choice.
