GNA show report

I was there as a dealer, Beachcomber Coins, Wednesday through Saturday. Here's some general observations:

Show set up, pre action!

Mid-way through Thursday:

US Mint did a release there. Good sized line to get the new quarters and dimes. I guess the dimes sold out by like 11 am. Somewhere in this photo is the mint, I swear it.

Show and travel observations:

Jet lag is real. I got about 3 hours sleep per night, not due to the lack of trying, but just being on wrong damn time zone.

Attendance and sales were nuts on Thursday, no public except for early birds. We got in at 1 pm, set up on 15 minutes or so, didn't stop until nearly 6. It was busy. And we were on the tough side of the bourse! :p

Friday was brisk during pre-open, busier after the public came in. The mint release had a good line, and you could get $5 of the new quarters at face value. I did that, as Hawaii likely won't see those for a hot minute. Saturday was definitely less than Friday, but still very active.

Wholesale, if you do it, is thriving. Most of the coins are getting aggregated at the wholesale level to different levels of wholesalers. I sell some stuff at that level, to mid-level wholesalers, that then get bought out by larger ones. Eventually, the Whatnot and other Auctioneers then hoover them up. This is from mint sets to $1 wheaties, and $1000 Indians. Details coins sell in the market as well, discounted heavily, but i think they go well. In a holder, they get real money - raw, they get ripped. My guess is most get broken out and sold raw to unsuspecting Whatnot users....im not on that platform, so i dont have a good idea of how many details holders are on there. But I know I sell a ton of details coins. Speculation on my part, for sure. Your mileage may vary....

Folks with B&M stores seem to typically not like wholesale, from my limited observations. And you cant buy from them at dealer rates, it seems. But every now and again, a squirrel can find a few nuts! Just takes a while.

Silver pricing was spot and up. I bought some at spot, and spot plus 1. Public didn't seem that interested in it, nor in generic gold. But AGEs, fractional, damn, those were in demand. Prices ranged from 485-545 for a 1/10 oz. Higher priced stuff seemed stagnant, competitive priced stuff was only there for moments. 90% was deadedededed. Common circ morgans and peace were trading well below melt (like $51-53 each).

Dealer to dealer was strong. Very strong. My table mate was priced strong on his cool stuff, and damn, he got good action! The hustlers came by often, trying to nuck him down....they didn't get far. When I sold out my cases, 75% of my best stuff was already gone to other dealers.

I tried to buy stock for the shoppe. But I was so late to the game that most of the good stuff was pre-vacuumed up, or was in "retail only" hands. Makes it hard to buy. I focused on buying better collector dollars in gem and up grades, and $400-600 copper. Been getting requests for stuff like 14D and 1909 S VDB Lincolns, etc. Found a few. My buddy liked one of them, so that's good. Managed to find 3 coins for one customer (67 morgans and 64 Indians) and a shipwreck coin for another customer. I splurged and bought the only Doily on the floor for me....

On the way home now. Flight is packed and 2 hours delayed. Total delay time is over 4 hours right now, and I still have a pretty good chance of misconnecting in LA. Ugh.

Overall, the GNA staff were great, and the show is very well run and organized. Hats off to them! And it was good to see several CU members at the show too!

Great report. I was there on Friday morning, shortly after opening and most tables had big lines. I did notice that there were a large percentage of the shoppers that were bald. I guess that means that the collectors are getting older (of course I've been bald since I was 35 and I'm 75 now). Anyway, great show, fast registration, get registered, get your name tag (photo ID required) and into the show. I drove in, 220 miles round trip, no real traffic until getting back closer to Atlanta.

And that baldness does shine so well from the overhead lighting. 😀 As does non tarnished BU's.
