1926 Colorful Toned Buffalo Nickel - does it have a shot at a "straight" grade?

ConnecticoinConnecticoin Posts: 13,263 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here is a colorfully toned 1926 Buffalo Nickel that I am on the fence with including in my next submission. I have seen these colors on BU Buffs in "straight" holders, but I am concerned that the pattern of the colors, particularly on the reverse, might result in a "QC" from PCGS. TIA for your input.

I'd guess no. I think they're pretty conservative these days on color in general. A dealer friend once told me these being toned up with cigar smoke to give them a rosy color.

PCGS gave up on being able to tell NT from AT long ago, I'd bet it gets a straight grade.

It looks market acceptable so worth a try tagged along to a bigger submission.

I owned several of these, graded by NGC, very pretty and I believe AT as they all had the exact same blue/pink toning

I got this one in a 64 holder (post-Phil Arnold crappy Trueview). Then I submitted one like it 3 months later and they QC'd it.

The cigar smoke ones usually look mega-bad. I actually think my 1926 sat in a sulfur laden envelope for a few decades. Maybe I should try NGC this time.

I think that went the way of "computer" grading.

A good question for PCGS, I do not know but have not heard anything about it for what seems like at least a decade. My guess is they found it not to be as amazing as predicted.

I would want send it in but in event it did not make straight grade wb prepared write off grading costs to opex. What is it’s CPG MV in grade you think it has chance to make?
